Introduction to Scripture

The story of Mary visiting Elizabeth is a moment of profound joy and celebration in the Bible. It’s not just a family reunion—it’s a divine proclamation of God’s promise being fulfilled. Mary, who is carrying the Savior of the world, and Elizabeth, who is carrying John the Baptist, come together in an extraordinary encounter that reminds us of God’s faithfulness and the joy of His good news.

The Events in the NIV Bible Verse

In Luke 1:39-56, we see Mary traveling to the hill country to visit her relative Elizabeth. As Mary enters Elizabeth’s home, something incredible happens—Elizabeth’s baby leaps in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, proclaims a blessing over Mary. Mary responds with a song of praise, often called the Magnificat, glorifying God for His mighty works and faithfulness. This passage is a powerful reminder of the joy that comes when we trust in God’s promises.

NIV Bible Verse: Luke 1:39-56 (NIV)

39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,
40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!
43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
46 And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
55 to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

Sermon: Mary Visits Elizabeth Luke 1: 39-56

1. The Journey of Joy (Luke 1:39-40)

Explanation:
Mary’s journey to Elizabeth’s home in the hill country is not just a physical trip but a spiritual journey fueled by faith and anticipation. Her decision to visit Elizabeth reflects her desire to share in the joy of God’s promises and to be with someone who would understand the miraculous work God was doing in her life.

Personal Thoughts:
I imagine Mary walking with a mixture of excitement and nervousness, pondering the angel’s words and the magnitude of what was happening. She knew her life had changed forever, and she sought the support and affirmation of Elizabeth, someone who had also experienced God’s miraculous intervention. In our lives, we often need companions in faith to encourage and strengthen us as we journey through life’s uncertainties.

Personal Commentary:
This passage reminds me that God doesn’t call us to walk alone. Mary’s journey shows us the importance of seeking fellowship and community. When we share our lives with others who are also pursuing God’s promises, we find encouragement and joy in the journey.

Personal Commentary on Christian Discipleship:
Christian discipleship begins with a step of faith, just like Mary’s journey. She trusted God’s plan and moved forward in obedience. As disciples, we must be willing to take that first step, even when the road ahead is uncertain, trusting that God is leading us.

Personal Reflection Commentary on Spiritual Growth:
Spiritual growth often happens during the journey, not just at the destination. Mary’s journey reminds us that our faith grows when we take steps of trust, lean on God, and seek out others who will encourage us in our walk with Him.

Ask Yourself This Question:
Who are the people in my life who encourage me to grow in faith, and how can I share the joy of God’s promises with them?

2. The Spirit-Filled Proclamation (Luke 1:41-45)

Explanation:
When Mary greeted Elizabeth, the baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, proclaimed a blessing over Mary. Elizabeth’s words affirmed Mary’s faith and celebrated the fulfillment of God’s promise.

Personal Thoughts:
Elizabeth’s reaction is so powerful—it’s a reminder that joy is contagious. Her blessing over Mary was not just a recognition of what God was doing but an affirmation that encouraged Mary to continue trusting God. Sometimes, we just need someone to speak life and truth into our situation.

Personal Commentary:
Elizabeth’s proclamation reminds us of the role of encouragement in our faith journey. As believers, we have the opportunity to build each other up, speaking words of blessing and affirmation that strengthen faith and bring joy.

Personal Commentary on Christian Discipleship:
Discipleship is about being filled with the Spirit and proclaiming God’s truth boldly. Elizabeth didn’t hesitate to acknowledge God’s work in Mary’s life. As disciples, we are called to encourage others, affirm their faith, and point them toward God’s promises.

Personal Reflection Commentary on Spiritual Growth:
Spiritual growth thrives in an atmosphere of affirmation and encouragement. When we are filled with the Spirit, we become instruments of God’s joy and truth in the lives of others, helping them grow closer to Him.

Ask Yourself This Question:
Am I allowing the Holy Spirit to work through me to encourage others and proclaim God’s promises?

3. The Song of Praise (Luke 1:46-49)

Explanation:
Mary’s response to Elizabeth’s blessing is a song of praise, often called the Magnificat. In her song, Mary glorifies God for His greatness, His mercy, and His faithfulness. She acknowledges her humble position and celebrates the mighty works God has done.

Personal Thoughts:
Mary’s praise is deeply personal and incredibly powerful. She sees herself as part of God’s bigger plan, yet she marvels at His care for her individually. This reminds me that worship flows from a heart that recognizes God’s goodness in both the big and small details of life.

Personal Commentary:
Mary’s song challenges us to pause and reflect on the goodness of God. How often do we stop to praise Him for the ways He has worked in our lives? Worship is not just about music; it’s about a heart overflowing with gratitude for who God is and what He’s done.

Personal Commentary on Christian Discipleship:
As disciples, our lives should be marked by worship. Mary’s song reminds us that discipleship is not just about following God’s commands but also about glorifying Him with our lives and pointing others to His greatness.

Personal Reflection Commentary on Spiritual Growth:
Spiritual growth happens when we cultivate a heart of worship. Mary’s song reflects her deep trust in God and her growing faith. As we praise God, we grow closer to Him and experience the joy of His presence.

Ask Yourself This Question:
When was the last time I paused to praise God for His faithfulness in my life?

4. The Faithfulness of God (Luke 1:50-56)

Explanation:
Mary’s song continues, emphasizing God’s faithfulness across generations. She reflects on His mercy, His justice, and His care for the humble and the hungry. Mary’s words remind us that God’s promises are unchanging and trustworthy.
