A Warm Welcome to the Word
Friend, I am so glad you’ve pulled up a chair to spend a few moments in God’s Word today. You know, in the busyness of leading others whether you are standing behind a pulpit, sitting in a board meeting, or leading a small group in your living room it is so easy to get caught up in the “to-do” lists of ministry. But today, we want to look at the “to-be” list. We’re going to look at how we can grow closer to Jesus by simply changing what we wear and how we view our neighbors. This isn’t about adding more weight to your shoulders; it’s about finding the joy and freedom that comes when we let God’s love be our primary motivation.
What’s Happening in This Passage
In this part of his letter to the Romans, the Apostle Paul is giving us a practical roadmap for Christian discipleship. He starts by talking about our “debts.” Now, most of us don’t like that word, but Paul points out that there is one debt we should actually be happy to keep paying every single day: the debt of love. He explains that when we truly love people, we naturally fulfill everything God asks of us. Then, he gives us a wake-up call. He reminds us that time is short and that our life with God is a journey toward a bright new day. He encourages us to take off the “pajamas” of our old, selfish habits and put on the “armor” of light, which is really just another way of saying we should try to look, act, and love more like Jesus every day.
Romans 13:8-14 (NIV)
8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.
So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.
