Section 2. Call to Worship

Let’s start by turning our hearts and minds to God. I want to share a passage that might feel a bit challenging, but it’s a reminder of what truly matters.

  • Scripture: Inspired by Amos 6:8, “The Sovereign LORD has sworn by himself—the LORD God Almighty declares: “I despise the pride of Jacob and detest his fortresses; I will deliver up the city and everything in it.” (NIV).
  • Hymn: (A short hymn can be sung at this point, such as “Amazing Grace” or “How Great Thou Art.”)

Section 3. Opening Prayer

Let’s bow our heads and open our hearts in prayer:

  • Prayer: Dear Lord, we come before you with humble hearts, seeking your guidance and wisdom. Help us to focus on what truly matters, to be mindful of others, and to use our blessings to serve you. Open our ears to hear your voice, our hearts to receive your love, and our hands to do your will. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Section 4. Praise and Worship

Now, let’s lift our voices together in praise and worship!

  • Introduction: Let’s sing songs that fill our hearts with joy and remind us of God’s amazing grace and love. Whether it’s a contemporary tune or a classic hymn, let’s pour out our adoration to the One who is worthy of all praise.

(Congregational singing led by a worship team or choir)

Section 5. Scripture Reading

Today, we’re diving into a powerful message from the book of Amos.

  • Introduction: Amos was a shepherd and fig-tree farmer who God called to speak out against the wealthy and complacent people of Israel. His message is a wake-up call to us all.
  • Context: In this passage, Amos confronts those who are living in luxury, oblivious to the suffering around them and the coming judgment. It’s a reminder that true security isn’t found in material possessions but in a right relationship with God and a heart for others.
  • Amos 6:1-8 (NIV):
    • 1 Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel comes!
    • 2 Pass over to Kalneh, and see, and from there go to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory?
    • 3 O you who put far away the day of disaster and bring near the seat of violence!
    • 4 Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and stretch themselves out on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall,
    • 5 who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp and like David invent for themselves instruments of music,
    • 6 who drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!
    • 7 Therefore they shall now be the first of those who go into exile, and the revelry of those who stretch themselves out shall pass away.
    • 8 The Lord GOD has sworn by himself, declares the LORD, the God of hosts: “I abhor the pride of Jacob and hate his strongholds, and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.”

Section 6. Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer

Let’s come together in prayer, seeking God’s guidance and intervention in our lives and the world around us.

  • Intercessory Prayer: Dear Lord, we lift up those who are struggling today – those who are facing hardship, those who are feeling lost or forgotten. Help us to be your hands and feet, to reach out to those in need, and to share your love with all. Remind us not to become complacent in our own comfort, but to be mindful of the suffering of others, just as Amos called the people of Israel to account.
  • Congregational Response: Lord, help us to turn away from pride and complacency, and to seek you with all our hearts. May we use our blessings to serve you and love others, following the example of Jesus. Amen.

Section 7. Offering

Giving is an act of worship, a way of expressing our gratitude to God for all He has given us.

  • Message: As we give our tithes and offerings, let us remember that everything we have comes from God. Let’s give generously, with a joyful heart, knowing that our gifts are used to further His kingdom and bless others.
  • Prayer: Lord, we thank you for the opportunity to give back a portion of what you have so graciously provided. Bless these gifts, and use them to make a difference in our church, our community, and our world. May our giving be an act of worship that honors you. Amen.

Section 8. Special Music

Now, let’s welcome our choir/soloist as they share a special song with us.

  • Introduction: Their music will speak to our hearts and draw us closer to God.

Bible Study: Amos 6: Ditch the Ivory Beds Before They Ditch You!
(A Bible Study That Will Flip Your Priorities!)

Hey Friends,

Let me share a little story with you. I once met a family who had it all. Big house, fancy cars, the works. They seemed perfectly happy on the surface, but underneath, they were empty. They were so busy chasing the next “big thing” that they forgot what truly mattered: their relationship with God and each other.

It reminded me so much of Amos 6. These folks in ancient Israel were lounging around on ivory beds, indulging in the finest foods, and completely oblivious to the impending doom. They thought their wealth would protect them, but Amos makes it clear: God cares more about humility, justice, and genuine faith than how comfortable your couch is.

Are we any different today? It’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of comfort and security, isn’t it? We work hard, we buy things, we try to create the perfect life for ourselves. But what if all that “stuff” is actually distracting us from what really matters? What if it’s blinding us to the needs of those around us?

That’s why I’m so excited about this Bible study. It’s not just about understanding the historical context of Amos. It’s about examining our own hearts and asking ourselves: Where are we placing our trust? What are we prioritizing in our lives? And are we truly living a life that honors God?
