Section 5. Scripture Reading

Today, we’ll be diving into the book of Exodus, chapter 32, verses 7 through 14. This passage tells the story of a pivotal moment in the history of the Israelites, when they strayed from God’s path while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments. It’s a powerful reminder of our own human tendency to wander and the importance of staying close to God’s guidance.

The Events

While Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments, the Israelites grew impatient and made a golden calf to worship. God, seeing their idolatry, was angered and ready to destroy them. However, Moses interceded on their behalf, pleading with God to remember His covenant and show mercy.

Exodus 32:7-14 (NIV)

7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. 8 They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’”

9 “I have seen these people,” the Lord said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked people. 10 Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”

11 But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God. “Lord,” he said, “why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people. 13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore with an oath: ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.’” 14 Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

Section 6. Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer

Let us come before God now in prayer, lifting up our concerns and asking for His guidance and grace.

Intercessory Prayer

Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that like the Israelites, we too can be easily led astray. Forgive us for the times we have turned away from you, seeking comfort and security in things that are not of you. We lift up those in our community who are struggling, those who are lost or facing difficult challenges. Guide them back to your loving embrace. Help us to be a people of faithfulness and obedience, always seeking your will in our lives.

Congregational Prayer Response

Lord, have mercy on us. Turn us from our fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people. (Based on Exodus 32:12)

Section 7. Offering

As we give our tithes and offerings today, let us remember that this is an act of worship and gratitude to God. It’s an opportunity to support the work of the church and to bless others in need. Your generosity makes a real difference in our community and beyond.

Prayer of Thanks

Gracious God, we thank you for your provision and for the opportunity to give back a portion of what you have blessed us with. May these gifts be used to further your kingdom, to spread your love, and to meet the needs of those around us. We offer these tithes and offerings as an act of worship, honoring you in all that we do. Amen.

Section 8. Special Music

Now, let’s prepare our hearts to receive the message as we listen to a special musical selection that will help us reflect on God’s grace and mercy.

Bible Study Time! “Is God About to Give Up on You?
(The Surprising Truth About Exodus 32:7-14)

Hey friends,

Ever feel like you’ve totally blown it? Like you’ve messed up so badly that there’s just no coming back? I think we all have those moments. I remember a time when… (Insert a short, relatable personal anecdote about a time you made a mistake or felt like you let someone down).

The Israelites in Exodus 32? They were there. Moses was up on the mountain getting the Ten Commandments, and they got impatient. They built a golden calf and started worshiping it! Talk about a mess!

But here’s the amazing thing: God, in His grace and love, was willing to listen to Moses’ plea. He relented. That’s a powerful word, isn’t it? It means He changed His mind, not because He’s fickle, but because He’s a God of mercy.

This story isn’t just about ancient history. It’s about us. It’s about how even when we stumble, God’s love and forgiveness are always within reach. And sometimes, all it takes is someone to intercede on our behalf… and for us to be willing to turn back to Him.

What’s your “golden calf” right now? What’s pulling you away from God? Let’s explore this together…
