Section 5. Scripture Reading
Now, let’s turn our attention to the Word of God. Today, we’ll be reading from Jeremiah chapter 32, verses 1 through 15. This passage tells the story of Jeremiah purchasing a field during a time of great difficulty and uncertainty.
Events in the NIV Bible Verse
Jeremiah is imprisoned by King Zedekiah for prophesying the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians. Despite this bleak situation, God commands Jeremiah to buy a field from his cousin Hanamel as a sign of hope and future restoration for the people of Israel. Jeremiah obeys, pays the price, and has the transaction properly recorded and witnessed.
Jeremiah 32:1-15 (NIV)
1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. 2 The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard in the royal palace of Judah.
3 Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, “Why do you prophesy as you do? You say, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it. 4 Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape out of the hands of the Babylonians but will certainly be handed over to the king of Babylon, and he will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes. 5 He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him, declares the Lord. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.’”
6 Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me: 7 Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth, because as the nearest relative it is your right and duty to buy it.’
8 “Then, just as the Lord had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin, because it is your right to redeem it; as the nearest relative, it is your duty to buy it.’ So I knew that this was the word of the Lord.
9 “I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels of silver. 10 I signed and sealed the deed, had it witnessed, and weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy—12 and I gave the deed to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed, and all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.
13 “In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions: 14 ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time. 15 For this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.’
Section 6. Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer
Let’s bow our heads and lift our hearts in prayer, drawing inspiration from Jeremiah’s example of hope in the face of adversity.
Intercessory Prayer
Lord, we come before you today mindful of the challenges in our own lives and in the world around us. Just as you instructed Jeremiah to buy a field as a symbol of future restoration, even when things looked bleak, help us to hold onto hope and trust in your promises. We pray for those facing hardship, for those who are imprisoned by fear or doubt, and for those who feel lost and without hope. May they find comfort and strength in your unfailing love.
Congregational Prayer Response
Lord, hear our prayers.
Section 7. Offering
Now is the time where we can all give back, and return a small portion of what God has blessed us with. It is the perfect time to bring your tithes and offering forward to the alter.
Offering Message
Giving our tithes and offerings is more than just a financial transaction; it’s an act of worship. It’s a way of acknowledging that everything we have comes from God and that we trust Him to provide for our needs.
Prayer of Thanks
Father, we thank you for the opportunity to give back to you. We dedicate these tithes and offerings to your service, trusting that you will use them to further your kingdom and bless your people. May our giving be a reflection of our gratitude and our commitment to you. Amen.
Section 8. Special Music
Now, let’s enjoy a special musical offering from our choir. They’ve prepared a beautiful piece that will uplift our spirits and prepare our hearts for the message today.
Bible Study: “Is God Asking You to Buy a Field… While You’re Locked Up?”
Locked Up, But Not Locked Out!
Hey everyone, ever feel like God’s asking you to do something completely crazy? Like buying a field when you’re stuck in prison?! That’s exactly what happened to Jeremiah in Jeremiah 32. He was locked up by King Zedekiah, prophesying doom for Jerusalem, and God tells him to buy a field from his cousin!
Now, why would God do that? Jerusalem was about to fall, everything seemed hopeless, but God’s message was clear: This isn’t the end. There’s hope for the future.
Jeremiah could have said, “Are you kidding me, God? I’m in prison! This city’s going down! This makes no sense!” But he didn’t. He obeyed. He bought the field, signed the deed, and trusted that God’s promise of restoration would come true.
What’s the field God’s asking you to buy today? Maybe it’s investing in a relationship when things are rocky. Maybe it’s starting that business you’ve dreamed of, even when the economy is uncertain. Maybe it’s believing for healing when the diagnosis is grim.
Jeremiah’s story teaches us that even in the darkest times, God’s promises are still valid. He sees beyond our present circumstances and knows the plans He has for us – plans to prosper us and give us a future (Jeremiah 29:11).
