Matthew 21:1-11 – Who Rode In?

And Quietly Tested Every Heart in the Crowd!

They shouted “Hosanna” on Sunday… but what if your church is full of people who cheer loudly – and follow quietly away?

Most churches don’t have a crowd problem

They have a commitment problem. In Matthew 21:1-11, Jesus rides into Jerusalem and the place ERUPTS.

Palm branches. Cloaks in the road. Voices shouting “Hosanna!” Looks like a revival, right?

But here’s the uncomfortable truth… Many of the same voices cheering on Sunday would go silent by Friday. And if we’re honest? That same pattern can show up in our churches today.

Crowds are easy. Disciples are built.

This passage forces us to ask a dangerous but necessary question:

👉 Are we growing attendance… or growing transformed lives?

Because a church built on excitement alone will always struggle… But a church built on true discipleship? That’s where real, lasting growth happens.

Scripture: Matthew 21: 1-11 (NIV)

Introduction to Matthew 21:1-11

Friends, get ready for a moment in history that perfectly illustrates Jesus’ identity and mission! We’re about to read from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 21, verses 1 through 11. This isn’t just another story; it’s a pivotal point, known as the Triumphal Entry. It’s when Jesus, with all the humble majesty of a king, finally makes His way into Jerusalem in a way that stirred the hearts of many and puzzled others. It’s a passage that invites us to consider who we believe Jesus really is and how we choose to respond to His presence in our lives, even today.

The Events in Matthew 21:1-11

As Jesus and His disciples approached Jerusalem, He sent two of them ahead to a village called Bethphage. His instructions were very specific: find a donkey and her colt, untie them, and bring them back. If anyone questioned them, they were simply to say, “The Lord needs them,” and the animals would be released. This was a deliberate fulfillment of prophecy! When they returned, Jesus sat on the young colt, and as He rode toward the city, an enormous crowd gathered. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and laid them down, creating a royal pathway. The crowds in front and behind Him began to shout praises, crying out, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” When Jesus finally entered Jerusalem, the entire city was stirred, asking, “Who is this?” And the crowds responded, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

NIV Bible Verse: Matthew 21:1-11

Matthew 21:1-11 (NIV)

1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 5 “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’” 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.

8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” 11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Sermon Title: What A King Looks Like?

Expository Sermon Outline

Friend, this passage isn’t just a historical event; it’s a mirror reflecting our own expectations and responses to Jesus today. Are we ready to truly welcome Him as King, even if He doesn’t look exactly like we expect? Let’s break down this amazing story and see what God wants to show us about His Son and our part in His plan.

1. The King’s Humble Yet Prophetic Arrival (Matthew 21:1-7)

This section highlights Jesus’ deliberate and orchestrated entry into Jerusalem, fulfilling ancient prophecy. He’s not crashing the party; He’s intentionally arriving as a King, yet in the most humble way possible—on a donkey’s colt. This act speaks volumes about His nature: He’s sovereign, yet gentle; powerful, yet meek. It reminds us that God’s ways are often not our ways, and true power in His kingdom looks very different from worldly power. For us, it’s a call to trust in God’s plan, even when it looks unexpected or unconventional.

2. The Crowds’ Passionate Proclamation (Matthew 21:8-9)

Here, we see the contagious excitement of the multitude. They spread their cloaks and palm branches, shouting “Hosanna!” which means “Save us, now!” and praising Him as the “Son of David” – a direct Messianic title. They recognized something special, something kingly about Jesus, and their praise was overflowing. This part of the story challenges us to consider: what is our level of devotion and praise for Jesus? Do we allow His presence to stir such a joyous and public proclamation in our lives? It’s a reminder that genuine faith often expresses itself in enthusiastic adoration.

3. The City’s Perplexing Question (Matthew 21:10-11)

As Jesus enters the city, a different reaction emerges: the whole city is “stirred” and asks, “Who is this?” The crowds respond, identifying Him as “Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” While the outer crowds praised Him as King, many in the city, perhaps those less familiar with His ministry or more tied to established expectations, were simply perplexed. This contrast is crucial: some recognized Him as King, others as a prophet, and many were just confused. This section invites us to wrestle with our own understanding of Jesus. Is He just a good teacher or prophet to us, or is He truly the King who deserves our full allegiance and transformed lives? It’s a call to move beyond mere curiosity to full commitment.
