That Decides Whether a Church Slowly Dies… or Comes Roaring Back to Life? Most people think church growth is about programs, music, or marketing. Paul says the real battle is far deeper – and almost nobody is talking about it.
The Invisible Choice That Can Revive a Church (Romans 8:6-11)
Friend,
Every church leader eventually asks the same quiet question: “How do we bring new life into our congregation?”
More people… More passion… More spiritual growth.
But in Romans 8:6-11, the Apostle Paul reveals something surprising. The real difference between spiritual life and spiritual decline isn’t attendance numbers, budgets, or strategies. It’s the mindset of the Spirit versus the mindset of the flesh.
Paul writes that the mind governed by the flesh leads to death – but the mind governed by the Spirit leads to life and peace. And here’s the powerful part… The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is the Spirit that brings life to believers today.
When a church focuses on the Spirit’s work:
• Hearts begin to soften.
• Faith becomes active again.
• People start living the gospel – not just hearing it.
• Communities notice something different.
Church growth doesn’t begin in the pews.
It begins in the heart.
And when hearts come alive in the Spirit, the church follows.

Bible Study: Romans 8:6-11 (NIV)
Introduction
Life is full of choices that shape the direction of our hearts. Every day we decide what will guide our thinking, our actions, and our priorities. In Romans 8:6-11, the Apostle Paul speaks about one of the most important choices a believer can make: whether we allow our minds to be guided by our human nature or by the Spirit of God.
Paul reminds us that the Christian life is not about trying harder or becoming more religious. Instead, it is about allowing God’s Spirit to lead us from the inside out. When the Spirit leads our thoughts and desires, our lives begin to change in ways we could never accomplish on our own.
This passage offers hope and encouragement. It reminds us that the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead now lives in every believer, bringing life, peace, and transformation.
The Events in the Passage
In this part of his letter to the believers in Rome, Paul explains the difference between living according to the flesh and living according to the Spirit. He describes how a mind focused only on human desires leads to spiritual separation from God, while a mind directed by God’s Spirit leads to life and peace.
Paul reassures believers that they are no longer controlled by their old nature because the Spirit of God lives within them. Through Christ, they have been given new life. And just as God raised Jesus from the dead, that same power is now at work in them, giving them spiritual life today and the promise of resurrection in the future.
Romans 8:6-11 (NIV)
6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.
9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.
10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.
11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
Sermon Title: “The Mind That Brings Life”
(Romans 8:6-11)
Introduction to the Sermon
Many people think the Christian life is about behavior modification-trying harder to be good. But Paul tells us the real transformation begins in the mind. When our minds are guided by the Spirit of God, everything begins to change: our attitudes, our desires, and even the direction of our lives.
Romans 8 reminds us that God has not left us to live the Christian life alone. He has placed His Spirit within us to guide us into a life filled with peace, purpose, and hope.
Sermon Outline Sections
1. Two Ways to Live
Romans 8:6-8
Paul begins by describing two different mindsets. One mindset is focused on human desires and self-centered living. The other is guided by the Spirit of God.
A mind controlled by the flesh leads away from God and ultimately results in spiritual emptiness. But a mind directed by the Spirit leads to something completely different-life and peace. When the Spirit shapes our thoughts, we begin to experience the kind of life God designed for us.
2. A New Identity in Christ
Romans 8:9
Paul then reminds believers of a powerful truth: if the Spirit of God lives within you, your identity has changed. You are no longer defined by your old nature.
This is one of the most encouraging truths in the Christian life. We are not trying to become something new-we already are new because of Christ. The Spirit living within us confirms that we belong to God and that we are part of His family.
3. Life Through the Spirit
Romans 8:10
Even though our bodies are still affected by the brokenness of the world, the Spirit of God brings spiritual life within us right now.
The Spirit produces righteousness in our lives-not through our strength, but through God’s power working in us. As we grow in our relationship with Christ, the Spirit shapes our character and helps us live in ways that honor God.
4. The Promise of Resurrection Life
Romans 8:11
Paul ends with a powerful promise. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is living in every believer.
That means the power of resurrection is already at work in our lives. And one day, God will complete His work by giving us new life beyond this world.
This promise reminds us that our hope is not only for today but for eternity. The Spirit of God assures us that life in Christ never ends.
Closing Encouragement
Romans 8:6-11 reminds us that the Christian life is not about striving harder-it is about surrendering daily to the Spirit of God. When we allow the Spirit to guide our minds and hearts, we begin to experience the life and peace that only God can give.
And that same Spirit continues to lead us, strengthen us, and prepare us for the life God has promised.
