Scripture Introduction to 1 Peter 2:2-10

Welcome! Today, let’s embark on a journey through a passage that beautifully illustrates our growth as believers. Picture a newborn craving pure spiritual milk, thirsting for it like their life depends on it which, quite honestly, it does. 1 Peter 2:2-10 invites us to deepen our relationship with God and offers us an identity that transforms our lives. This passage encourages us to grow in maturity, revealing the joy and purpose of true Christian discipleship.

The Events in 1 Peter 2:2-10

In 1 Peter 2:2-10, the Apostle Peter paints a vivid picture of spiritual growth. He likens believers to newborn babies hungry for spiritual nourishment. As we feed on that nourishment, we grow and become integral parts of a spiritual house, with Christ as our cornerstone. Peter emphasizes our identity as a chosen people, a royal priesthood, called to declare the praises of God. Through this powerful metaphor, we understand our purpose and place within God’s plan a transformation from spiritual infancy to maturity.

The NIV Bible Verse: 1 Peter 2:2-10

2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

4 As you come to him, the living Stone rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”

7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,” 8 and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message which is also what they were destined for.

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Outline Section 1: Craving Spiritual Growth (Verses 2-3)

Like newborn babies, we’re encouraged to crave pure spiritual milk. This longing for spiritual nourishment is vital for our growth in salvation. Having tasted the goodness of the Lord, we are motivated to pursue Him more fervently, allowing His goodness to nurture our spiritual well-being.

Outline Section 2: Embracing Our Identity in Christ (Verses 4-6)

As we come closer to Christ, the living Stone, we become like living stones ourselves. We are being built into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood. Christ, the cornerstone, is integral to this construction. Trusting in Him ensures we will never be put to shame, affirming our role and identity within God’s kingdom.

Outline Section 3: Recognizing Our Role and Purpose (Verses 7-8)

While believers find this cornerstone precious, others stumble upon it out of disbelief and disobedience. Yet, our understanding of Christ shapes our identity in His kingdom. This realization instills a deeper sense of our purpose and calling, encouraging us to stand firm in our faith.

Outline Section 4: Declaring His Praises (Verses 9-10)

We’ve become a chosen people, a royal priesthood, who delight in declaring God’s praises. This passage reminds us of our transformation from not being a people to becoming God’s people, from lacking mercy to receiving it abundantly. In this new light, we find the joy of living in His grace and sharing it with the world.
