The Joy of Our Blessed Hope: Why the return of Jesus is the best news you’ll ever hear.
Introduction to the Scripture
Sometimes life brings challenges that leave us feeling discouraged or unsure about what’s next. But in His word, God gives us a special anchor for those moments. Let’s look at a passage that was written to lift our eyes above our current circumstances to the incredible promise that awaits every believer.
The Events in the Scripture
In these verses, the Apostle Paul is addressing believers who were worried about friends and family who had already passed away before Jesus returned. He clarifies exactly what happens: the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, there will be a shout, and those who have already died in Christ will rise first. Then, those of us who are still living will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, ensuring we will be with Him forever.

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 – A Hope That Lives On?
13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.

Fellowship Bible Study & Sermon Outline: 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18
1. Grieve with Hope 1 Thessalonians 4:13–14
Paul reminds believers that grief is real, but it doesn’t have to leave us without hope. Because Jesus died and rose again, we can trust that those who have died in Christ are safe with God and will share in the life Jesus promises.
This hope doesn’t ask us to hide our sadness. It gives us comfort in the middle of it, reminding us that death does not have the final word.
2. Look Forward to the Lord’s Coming 1 Thessalonians 4:15–17
Paul points the church toward the promised return of Jesus. He describes the Lord coming from heaven and believers both those who have died in Christ and those still living being gathered to meet Him.
The details invite us to place our confidence in Christ, not in fear or speculation. Our future is held by the Lord, and nothing can separate His people from the hope of being with Him.
3. Encourage One Another 1 Thessalonians 4:18
Paul ends with a practical instruction: share these words with one another. The promise of Christ’s return is not only something to believe privately; it is a source of comfort we can offer to friends and family who are grieving or discouraged.
As we remind one another of God’s faithfulness, we help each other keep going with hope, love, and confidence in the future He has promised.
Practical Applications: 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18
Make Room for Grief and Hope
Let God’s promise comfort you without denying your sadness.
When you’re grieving, you don’t have to pretend everything is fine. Bring your sorrow honestly to God, and remember that Jesus’ resurrection gives believers hope beyond death.
Example: Reach out to someone who is mourning, listen without rushing to fix their pain, and gently remind them they don’t have to walk through it alone.
Live with Confidence in Christ
Let the promise of Jesus’ return shape how you face today.
We may not know when or how every future event will unfold, but we can trust the One who holds our future. Let that confidence help you meet uncertainty with faith rather than fear.
Example: When tomorrow feels overwhelming, pause to pray and name one way you can trust Christ with what you cannot control.
Encourage Someone with Hope
Share words that strengthen and comfort.
Paul tells believers to encourage one another with this promise. A thoughtful word, a prayer, or simply being present can help someone remember that God has not forgotten them.
Example: Send a message to a friend who is struggling: “I’m thinking of you and praying for you. Would it help to talk or spend some time together?”
