When hope feels lost and the future looks empty, God reminds His people that His Spirit can bring life where nothing seems possible.

Dear Friend,

Every church has seasons when things feel… dry.

Attendance dips. Energy fades. Leaders grow tired. And sometimes it feels like the life has gone out of the room.

That’s exactly the kind of moment we see in Ezekiel 37:1-14.

God brings the prophet Ezekiel into a valley filled with dry bones – a picture of a people who had lost their hope. But then God asks a powerful question:

Son of man, can these bones live?”

And then something amazing happens.

When God’s Word is spoken and God’s Spirit breathes, those dry bones begin to move…
They rise… They stand… And what once looked dead becomes a living, breathing army.

This message is incredibly important for churches today.

Because many congregations are praying for renewal. Many leaders are asking God to restore passion, faith, and purpose. And Ezekiel’s message reminds us of this powerful truth:

No church is beyond the reach of God’s Spirit.

When God breathes on His people, hope returns, faith grows stronger, and new life begins. Sometimes revival doesn’t begin with a crowd. Sometimes it begins with one faithful voice speaking God’s Word with trust and courage. And that’s where your preaching matters more than you may realize.

Ezekiel 37:1-14  When God Breathes Life into Dry Places?

The Valley of Dry Bones

1 The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.”

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath[a] enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”

So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet – a vast army.

11 Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’ 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13 Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. 14 I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.’”

Bible Study and Expository Sermon Outline

Section 1 – God Meets Us in the Valley

Ezekiel 37:1-3

Sometimes God leads us into places we would never choose on our own. In Ezekiel’s vision, the Lord brings him into a valley filled with dry bones – a picture of hopelessness and loss. The bones were not just dry; they were very dry, meaning life had been gone for a long time. Yet even in that valley, God was present. Before anything changed, God asked a question: “Can these bones live?” This reminds us that even when our churches, families, or hearts feel spiritually dry, God is still asking us to trust Him. The valley may look lifeless, but it is never beyond God’s power.

Section 2 – God’s Word Brings Renewal

Ezekiel 37:4-6

God instructs Ezekiel to do something surprising – speak to the bones. The power was not in Ezekiel himself, but in the Word of God he proclaimed. When God’s Word is spoken faithfully, it carries life within it. This passage reminds us that revival does not begin with better programs or bigger crowds. Renewal begins when God’s truth is proclaimed with faith. When God’s Word is preached and received, hearts begin to soften and hope begins to rise again.

Section 3 – God’s Spirit Restores Life

Ezekiel 37:7-10

As Ezekiel obeys, something amazing happens. The bones begin to come together, tendons and flesh appear, but the bodies are still not alive. Then God tells Ezekiel to call on the breath – the Spirit of God – to enter them. Suddenly, what was once dead stands up as a living army. This reminds us that God’s work is not complete without His Spirit. Churches can have structure, plans, and activity, but true spiritual life only comes when God’s Spirit breathes into His people. When the Spirit moves, faith awakens and people rise with renewed purpose.

Section 4 – God Gives Hope to His People

Ezekiel 37:11-14

God explains the meaning of the vision: the dry bones represent His people who had lost all hope. They believed their future was gone. But God promises to open their graves and bring them back to life. This is a message of restoration. When God breathes His Spirit into His people, hope returns and purpose is renewed. For the church today, this vision reminds us that no congregation is too dry, no community too broken, and no situation too far gone for God to restore. When God speaks and His Spirit moves, new life always follows.
