Welcome, friends. I am so incredibly glad you’re here today. We are going to look together at a deeply encouraging passage of Scripture, Philippians 1:21-30, and talk about what it means to truly live a life full of purpose, joy, and deep connection with God.
If we’re honest with ourselves, we all have moments where we look around and wonder, “What is my real purpose in this season of my life?” Sometimes life feels like a breeze, and other times, it feels like we are just trying to keep our heads above water. The Apostle Paul knew exactly what that felt like. When he wrote this letter to his friends in the city of Philippi, he wasn’t sitting on a beach; he was actually sitting in a prison cell. Yet, his words are overflowing with an unshakeable joy.
Let’s unpack how we can find that same kind of joy and grow closer to God today.
Introduction to Philippians 1:21-30
Welcome, friends! I am so glad we can spend this time together diving into God’s Word. Today, we are looking at a deeply encouraging passage from the book of Philippians. In this letter, the Apostle Paul is writing to a group of close friends—a church family he loves dearly. His words are designed to lift their spirits, help them grow in their relationship with God, and remind them of the profound joy that comes from walking with Jesus every single day, no matter what life throws our way.
The Events in the Passage
To really appreciate these verses, it helps to understand where Paul is when he writes them. He isn’t sitting on a comfortable patio enjoying the sunshine; he is actually under house arrest in Rome, chained to a Roman guard, and waiting to hear if he will be executed for his faith. Yet, despite his difficult circumstances, Paul is overflowing with hope. He is weighing his deep desire to go to heaven and be with Jesus against his deep love for his friends and his desire to stay and help them grow spiritually. He ultimately realizes that God still has a beautiful plan for his life right where he is.
Scripture: Philippians 1:21-30 (NIV)
21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.
27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved and that by God. 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, 30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
