Section 5. Scripture Reading Acts 16:16-34
Introduction to the Passage
Today, we reflect on Acts 16:16-34, a powerful narrative of faith in action. Paul and Silas, facing imprisonment for their faith, choose to worship and trust God, resulting in an amazing demonstration of His power and grace.
The Events in Acts 16:16-34
In this passage, Paul and Silas encounter a fortune-telling slave girl, her liberation leading to their arrest. Yet, even in chains, their faith remains unshaken. As they sing and pray, a miraculous earthquake sets them free and brings the jailer—and his entire household—to faith in Christ.
Acts 16:16-34
Paul and Silas in Prison
16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.
19 When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities. 20 They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar 21 by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.”
22 The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. 23 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24 When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.
25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”
29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.
Section 6. Pastoral or Intercessory Prayer
Prayer
Loving Heavenly Father, we thank You for the story of Paul and Silas, for their unwavering faith and their acts of worship even in jail. Lord, we ask that You help us to find You in every circumstance—when things are going well and even when we face challenges. Strengthen our faith, fill us with Your joy, and open our hearts to see Your miraculous work around us. We pray for those who feel imprisoned by fear, worry, or despair—they too need Your hope and freedom. May Your Spirit move in lives to bring healing, salvation, and peace. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Congregational Prayer Response
Let’s echo the words of Acts 16:31:
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”
Together, we reaffirm our faith and pray that many more will come to meet Jesus and experience the salvation and freedom found in Him.
Section 7. Offering
Message about Tithes and Offerings
As we prepare to give today, remember that our tithes and offerings are a heartfelt act of worship. Giving allows us to share God’s love, support ministries, and spread His light in our community and around the world. It’s not just about finances; it’s about trusting God and expressing our gratitude for His many blessings.
Prayer of Thanks
Heavenly Father, thank You for the provision You have given us. We offer back a portion of what You’ve entrusted to us, knowing that You multiply it for Your kingdom. Use these gifts to bring hope, healing, and salvation. We worship You through our giving, and we trust You with our lives and resources. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Section 8. Special Music
Introduction to Special Music
Now, as a moment of reflection and praise, we invite the worship team to lead us in a special song that speaks of God’s power, faithfulness, and love. Let’s open our hearts fully to His presence as we listen.
