Section 5. Scripture Reading

Introducing the Scripture

Today’s passage comes from Nehemiah 8:1-10. This is a powerful moment in Israel’s history where God’s people come together to hear His Word after a season of rebuilding. It’s a reminder of how God’s Word has the power to convict, inspire, and restore us.

The Events in the Passage

In this passage, we see the people of Israel gather as one at the Water Gate. Ezra the priest reads the Book of the Law of Moses, and the people respond with awe and reverence. As they hear God’s Word, their hearts are moved to tears. But the Levites remind them that God’s Word also brings joy, and they’re encouraged to celebrate His goodness with feasting and fellowship.

Scripture: Nehemiah 8:1-10 (NIV)

1 All the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel.
2 So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand.
3 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
4 Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.
5 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up.
6 Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
7 The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed the people in the Law while the people were standing there.
8 They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.
9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.
10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Section 6. Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer

Intercessory Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Word. Just as the people of Israel were moved to tears and joy when they heard the Law, may we also experience a fresh revelation of Your truth today. We pray for those in our community who feel weary or burdened—may they find strength in the joy that comes from You. Bless our time together, and may we leave here renewed and encouraged to live out Your Word.

Congregational Response

Leader: The Word of the Lord brings life and joy.
Congregation: The joy of the Lord is our strength!

The Importance of Giving

As we come to the time of offering, let’s remember that giving is an act of worship. It’s an opportunity for us to honor God and partner with Him in His work in our church, our community, and around the world. Just as the people in Nehemiah celebrated God’s provision with feasting and sharing, we, too, can reflect our gratitude through generous giving.

The joy of the Lord is our strength, and that joy grows when we give back to Him with cheerful hearts.

Offering Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for being the ultimate provider. Every blessing we have is from Your hand, and today we offer back a portion of what You’ve given us. Bless these tithes and offerings, and use them for Your glory to build Your kingdom here on earth. May our giving bring joy to our hearts and reflect our trust in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“The 2,000-Year-Old Secret That Will Ignite Joy, Restore Hope, and Grow Your Church in Just 10 Verses”

Let me take you to a scene from over two thousand years ago.

The sun was just beginning to rise over Jerusalem. Men, women, and children began to gather—not in small clusters, but as one united people. The sound of their footsteps on the dusty ground echoed with purpose. They weren’t coming for entertainment. They weren’t coming for a festival. They were coming to hear something sacred—something they hadn’t heard in a very long time.

At the center of it all stood Ezra, a teacher of the Law, holding a scroll that held the very words of God. And as he opened it, something extraordinary happened.

People stood. For hours, they listened attentively, their hearts breaking as they realized how far they had wandered from God. Tears fell freely as they recognized their sin, but before despair could settle in, a life-changing proclamation was made:

“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

In that moment, everything changed. What began in sorrow turned into joy. What started as conviction transformed into celebration. The people feasted, they shared with those in need, and their renewed hope became the foundation for spiritual growth that would impact generations to come.

Now imagine this scene happening in your congregation. Picture men and women rediscovering the beauty of God’s Word, tears giving way to smiles as they encounter the joy of the Lord. Envision the spiritual growth that happens when God’s Word is not just heard but truly understood and lived.

This isn’t just a story from ancient history. It’s a call to action for all of us. Because the same Word that transformed hearts back then has the power to transform your church, your family, and your own life today.
