Welcome to Our Time of Worship

Good morning, everyone! It’s a joy to be here with you today as we gather to grow in our faith and understanding of God’s love for us. Whether you’re here in person or online, I want you to know that you are welcome. Today, we’ll dive into a powerful scripture from Hebrews 9 that speaks about the incredible sacrifice Jesus made for us. It’s a message that reminds us of the cleansing and freedom we find in Him. Let’s open our hearts to what God has for us today.

Opening Prayer: Let’s pray together.

Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts. Thank You for the gift of another day to gather as Your people. We ask that You would open our hearts and minds to hear Your Word today. Help us to understand more deeply the sacrifice Jesus made for us and the new life that we have because of Him. Guide our thoughts and draw us closer to You as we study Your Word. We ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Introduction to Scripture

Today’s scripture comes from the Book of Hebrews, Chapter 9, verses 11 through 14. The book of Hebrews is filled with deep truths about Jesus as our High Priest, the One who offered the perfect sacrifice for our sins. In these verses, we see how Jesus didn’t just follow the old ways of rituals and sacrifices—He brought something better, something complete. His sacrifice wasn’t just for outward cleanliness; it was for the cleansing of our hearts and consciences, making us right with God forever.

The Events in Hebrews 9:11-14

In this passage, the writer of Hebrews explains that while the old covenant required priests to continually offer sacrifices in the temple for the people’s sins, Jesus did something far greater. He entered the heavenly tabernacle—not one made by human hands—and offered His own blood, once and for all. This sacrifice doesn’t just cleanse the outside, like the old rituals, but it purifies our hearts. It brings true forgiveness and a new beginning with God.

Scripture: Hebrews 9:11-14 (NIV)

11 But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation.

12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.

13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean.

14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

Intercessory Prayer: Let’s take a moment to pray.

Father, we thank You for sending Jesus, our great High Priest, to offer the perfect sacrifice for our sins. His blood was shed to cleanse us, not just outwardly but deep within. We ask that You would cleanse our hearts and minds today, removing anything that stands between us and You. Help us to live in the freedom that Jesus offers, and may we serve You with clean hearts and renewed minds. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

Congregational Prayer Response: Let’s now respond together:

“Lord, cleanse our hearts and minds through the sacrifice of Jesus. Help us to live in the freedom of Your grace and to serve You with pure hearts. Amen.”

Sermon Title: “The Perfect Sacrifice: Cleansed for Life”

This title emphasizes the completeness and eternal nature of Christ’s sacrifice as described in Hebrews 9:11-14, highlighting how His offering cleanses us not just outwardly but deeply and eternally, enabling us to live fully for God.

Expository Sermon Outline: Hebrews 9:11-14

1. Christ as Our High Priest (Hebrews 9:11)

“But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here…”

Jesus is presented as our ultimate High Priest, entering not a man-made temple but a greater, heavenly sanctuary, signaling the arrival of God’s good promises through Him.

2. The Perfect Sacrifice (Hebrews 9:12)

“He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood…”

Unlike the old covenant’s repeated animal sacrifices, Jesus offered Himself once and for all, shedding His own blood to obtain eternal redemption for us.

3. Cleansing Beyond the Physical (Hebrews 9:13)

“The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean.”

Under the old covenant, animal sacrifices could only cleanse outwardly, providing temporary ceremonial cleanliness but not addressing the deeper spiritual needs.

4. The Eternal Impact of Christ’s Sacrifice (Hebrews 9:14)

“How much more, then, will the blood of Christ… cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!”

Jesus’ sacrifice purifies our inner selves—our consciences—freeing us from dead works so we can truly serve the living God with a clear heart.
