Hey friends,

So glad you’re here today! You know, sometimes we think we’ve got it all figured out. We look at life, at people, at God, and we just know what’s going on. But what if there’s a whole dimension you’re missing? What if true sight isn’t just about having working eyes, but about truly seeing with your heart?

What IF God is Doing Something Amazing… and You’re Completely Missing It? (Discover True Sight!)

You know, I remember a season in my life, honestly, early in my ministry, when I was so focused on doing everything right, on the outward appearance of things. I was like a spiritual checklist warrior! If someone wasn’t acting exactly as I thought a “good Christian” should, my immediate reaction was to analyze their problem, their sin, their lack of effort. I was seeing, but I wasn’t truly seeing.

I had this perfect picture in my head of what God was supposed to be doing, and how people were supposed to respond, and when reality didn’t match up, I instantly thought someone had messed up. But then, through a series of humbling experiences and some tough conversations with mentors, I started to realize… the biggest blind spot wasn’t in others, it was in me! My own preconceived notions, my own rigid expectations, my own quiet judgments were actually keeping me from seeing what God was really doing in their lives, and even in mine.

It’s so easy, isn’t it, to look at a situation, or a person, and think we’ve got it all figured out, only to find out later we were completely missing the point. We might have eyes, but we’re not truly seeing. And that, my friends, is exactly what we’re going to dive into today with one of the most incredible stories Jesus ever told. It’s a story that will challenge you to look beyond the surface and discover what it truly means to have your eyes, and your heart, wide open to God’s amazing work.

When God Opens Your Eyes: Discovering the Joy of True Sight

Here’s how we’re going to break down this powerful passage from John chapter 9, to truly understand the joy and freedom that comes when God opens our eyes!

1. The Question of Blame vs. The Purpose of Grace (John 9:1-7)

  • Beyond “Who Sinned?” – God’s Greater Plan

This section opens with Jesus encountering a man born blind, and His disciples immediately defaulting to the common religious question of the day: “Who sinned, this man or his parents?” But Jesus, with profound wisdom and grace, redirects their focus entirely. He tells them this man’s condition is not about blame, but about revealing God’s glory. Then, He acts! He heals the man in a most unexpected way, demonstrating that God’s power isn’t confined to our logical boxes. This reminds us that God often works in surprising ways to achieve His redemptive purposes, and our job isn’t to judge the ‘why’ but to participate in the ‘how’.

2. The Shock of Transformation & The Scrutiny of Skepticism (John 9:8-23)

  • From Blindness to Belief: Navigating the Doubters

Imagine the scene! The neighbors, who had known this man as a beggar for years, are now utterly confused. “Is this the same guy?” they wonder. The man’s testimony is simple and clear: “The man called Jesus made mud… and I can see!” But not everyone is celebrating. The religious leaders, the Pharisees, are more interested in how this happened and who did it, rather than the miraculous outcome. Their rigid rules and preconceived notions about the Sabbath immediately trigger suspicion and interrogation. Even the man’s parents, fearing excommunication, cautiously distance themselves. This section powerfully illustrates how genuine transformation can be met with doubt, suspicion, and even fear from those who are more committed to their traditions than to the undeniable evidence of God at work.

3. The Courage of Conviction & The Cost of Truth (John 9:24-34)

  • Standing Strong: When Your Story Challenges the Status Quo

The pressure mounts! The Pharisees call the healed man back for a second, more intense interrogation. They try to discredit Jesus and intimidate the man. But something amazing happens: this man, who was once physically blind and likely marginalized, finds incredible courage and spiritual clarity. He doesn’t back down. He logically points out the obvious: “If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” His simple, honest testimony, born from personal experience, exposes the spiritual blindness of his interrogators. For his unwavering conviction, he is ultimately cast out from the synagogue. This section highlights the importance of courageously sharing our personal experience with Jesus, even when it puts us at odds with the “experts” or requires us to pay a price for speaking the truth.

4. The Revelation of Messiah & The Danger of Self-Righteous Blindness (John 9:35-41)

  • Seeing Jesus Clearly: The Choice Between Light and Darkness

Just when he’s at his lowest point, cast out and alone, Jesus seeks him out. This is a beautiful picture of Jesus’ compassion! He asks the man, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” And upon learning who Jesus truly is, the man worships Him. His physical sight led to spiritual sight! Then, Jesus makes a profound statement: He came to bring judgment, so that the blind would see and those who see would become blind. The Pharisees, overhearing this, ask if they too are blind. Jesus’ response is chilling: because they claim to see, their guilt remains. This final section reveals the heart of the message: true sight comes from recognizing and worshiping Jesus, while claiming self-sufficiency and clinging to our own perceived ‘sight’ can keep us in the deepest spiritual darkness. It’s a powerful call to humility and genuine faith.
