Luke 20:27-38 Sermon Outline: The God of the Living
Here’s a sermon outline based on Luke 20:27-38, designed to help your congregation understand Jesus’ message about eternal life and live with hope in the present:
Section 1: 20:27-33 – The Sadducees’ Question
- Sub-Heading: A Question of Resurrection
- Explanation: The Sadducees, who did not believe in the resurrection, try to trap Jesus with a hypothetical question about a woman who married seven brothers. Their question is designed to highlight what they see as the absurdity of the idea of resurrection.
Section 2: 20:34-36 – Life in This Age vs. the Age to Come
- Sub-Heading: A Different Kind of Existence
- Explanation: Jesus explains that life in the age to come is different from life in this age. In the resurrection, people will not marry or be given in marriage, and they will be like angels, unable to die. He emphasizes that the rules and customs of this world do not apply in the eternal realm.
Section 3: 20:37-38 – God of the Living, Not the Dead
- Sub-Heading: God is Eternal
- Explanation: Jesus concludes by affirming that God is the God of the living, not the dead. He argues that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are still alive in God’s presence, even though they have died physically. This highlights the eternal nature of our relationship with God.
Section 4: A Compelling Application
- Sub-Heading: How Does This Apply to Our Lives?
- Explanation: This helps your listeners to understand that by knowing what happens when we die, it will enable us to live a better life when we are alive. Reminding ourselves and each other, helps to strengthen our relationships with the Lord!
May Jesus pour his Grace Upon you and your family during this special time in our lives.

Section 5. Scripture Reading
Today, we’ll be exploring the profound message of Luke 20:27-38. In this passage, Jesus encounters the Sadducees, who try to trap him with a question about the resurrection. Jesus’ response reveals a deeper truth about the nature of God and the reality of eternal life.
Luke 20:27-38 (NIV):
27 Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they asked, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second married her, and then the third, and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children. 31 Finally, the woman died too. 32 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since all seven were married to her?” 33 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.
34 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 35 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels; they are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection.
36 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’
37 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” 38 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!”
Section 6. Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer
Let’s pause now to pray for those who are grieving, those who are facing death, and those who are searching for meaning and purpose in their lives.
- Intercessory Prayer: Loving God, we lift up to you those who are struggling with loss, those who are facing illness, and those who are questioning the meaning of life. Comfort them with your presence, fill them with your hope, and guide them to your truth. Help them to know that they are not alone, that you are the God of the living, and that your love extends beyond the grave.
- Congregational Prayer Response: “He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
Section 7. Offering
Giving is an act of worship, a tangible expression of our gratitude to God for His abundant blessings. As we give our tithes and offerings, let us do so with joyful hearts, trusting that God will use our gifts to bless others and to advance His kingdom.
- Loving God, we thank you for your generosity and provision. We dedicate these gifts to your service, asking that you would use them to meet the needs of others and to bring glory to your name. Amen.
Section 8. Special Music
Now, we have the privilege of hearing a special musical performance that will touch your hearts and inspire your souls. [Insert name of performer or group] will share their gifts with us, and I encourage you to listen with open hearts and minds.
