Bible Study: A Faith That Won’t Give Up
Introduction to Matthew 15:21-28
In our journey of faith, we often encounter seasons where God feels silent or where the obstacles in front of us seem insurmountable. Today, we are looking at one of the most touching and encouraging encounters in the New Testament.
It’s a story about a mother’s love, a desperate need, and a faith so persistent that it caught the attention of the Savior Himself. This passage shows us that God’s grace isn’t just for a select few; it’s for anyone who is willing to approach Him with a humble and trusting heart.
The Events in the Passage
Jesus had traveled to the region of Tyre and Sidon – territory outside the typical Jewish borders – when He was approached by a Canaanite woman. She was in a desperate situation; her daughter was suffering terribly from demon-possession.
Despite being an “outsider” and facing initial silence from Jesus and rejection from the disciples, she refused to walk away. She pushed through the social barriers and even a difficult analogy from Jesus, responding with such incredible humility and wit that Jesus praised her great faith and granted her request immediately.

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession.”
23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” 25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” 27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” 28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

The Sermon: The Courage to Seek (Matthew 15:21-22)
In these opening verses, we see a woman who was at the end of her rope. She lived in a region outside the Jewish circles, yet she had heard enough about Jesus to know He was her only hope. She didn’t wait for a formal invitation; she went to Him because her need was greater than her fear of rejection. This is where every journey of faith begins—with the simple, courageous decision to bring our mess to the Master.
When I look at this passage, I’m struck by her boldness. Most of us spend so much time trying to look “put together” before we come to God. We think we need to have our act cleaned up or our theological ducks in a row. But this woman shows us that God isn’t looking for a polished performance; He’s looking for a persistent heart. She didn’t let her background or her “outsider” status stop her. She just saw Jesus, and she ran.
My personal commentary on this is that we often create our own barriers to God. We tell ourselves we aren’t “religious” enough or that our problems are too small (or too big) for Him. But notice that Jesus went to her region. He was there for her. He is in your “region” today, too. He has already traveled the distance to be near you; all you have to do is turn your face toward Him and cry out.
In terms of Christian discipleship, this section teaches us that the first step of being a follower is being a seeker. You can’t follow someone you aren’t willing to approach. Discipleship isn’t about knowing all the answers; it’s about knowing the One who does. It’s the daily habit of saying, “Lord, I can’t do this on my own, and I’m coming to You first.”
Reflecting on spiritual growth, I believe we grow the most when we are the most desperate. Comfort is the enemy of growth. When things are going great, we tend to rely on ourselves. But when we are pushed to the edges, like this woman, we develop the spiritual “muscles” of courage. Growth happens the moment you decide that your need for God is greater than your need for the world’s approval.
Remember: Don’t just seek God for what He can do; know that God is seeking you for what you can become. This means that while we are busy looking for a miracle, God is busy looking for a relationship. He wants to change your situation, but more importantly, He wants to change you.
