Sermon Title: Answering the Call
Expository Sermon Outline
Matthew 4:12-17 – The Preparation: God’s Timing in Our Darkest Moments
Scripture References: Matthew 4:12-17
Jesus withdraws to Galilee after John’s arrest – not in fear, but in fulfillment. He steps into a region described as “Galilee of the Gentiles,” a place of spiritual shadows, and begins preaching: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
This isn’t coincidence – it’s divine timing. Even in moments that seem like setbacks, God is setting the stage for His light to shine brightest. Jesus doesn’t wait for perfect conditions; He brings light right where it’s needed most.
Matthew 4:18-20 – The Invitation: Simple Faith, Radical Response
Scripture References: Matthew 4:18-20
Jesus sees Peter and Andrew casting nets into the sea. He doesn’t give them a theological dissertation – He says, “Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.” Immediately, they leave their nets and follow Him.
This is the beauty of discipleship: Jesus meets us right where we are, in our everyday lives, and invites us into something greater. It’s not about having it all together; it’s about being willing to follow.
Matthew 4:21-22 – Beyond Comfort: Leaving What’s Familiar for What’s Eternal
Scripture References: Matthew 4:21-22
Next, Jesus calls James and John – sons of Zebedee – mending nets in their father’s boat. Without hesitation, they leave both their father and their livelihood behind to follow Him.
Following Jesus often means letting go of what’s comfortable, familiar, or even family ties. It’s a step of faith that says, “I trust You more than what I’ve always known.”
Matthew 4:23 – The Mission: Teaching, Preaching, and Healing
Scripture References: Matthew 4:23
Jesus travels throughout Galilee, teaching in the synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness. His ministry is holistic – addressing spiritual, emotional, and physical needs.
We’re called to do the same – not just with words, but with action. Our faith isn’t meant to be kept inside four walls; it’s meant to be lived out in love and service.

Let’s keep building this church not just with walls, but with love and action.
Section 2. Call to Worship
Let’s turn our hearts toward God together this morning. In Matthew 4, we read how Jesus began His ministry by calling ordinary people to follow Him – and He’s still calling us today. Let’s read responsively from verses 19-20:
Leader: “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
People: At once they left their nets and followed him.
Let’s stand and sing together, “Here I Am, Lord,” as we offer our hearts in worship.
Section 3. Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before You this morning with thankful hearts. You have brought us together as a family – united not by perfection, but by grace. Open our ears to hear Your voice, soften our hearts to receive Your Word, and fill this place with Your presence. We ask that You guide our time together and draw us closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Section 4. Praise and Worship
What a joy it is to lift our voices together in praise! Whether you love the classics or the newest worship songs, every melody and every word we sing is an offering to our God who is worthy of all honor. Let’s worship with expectancy, knowing that God inhabits the praises of His people.
Section 5. Scripture Reading
This morning, we’re going to look at Matthew 4:12-23 – a passage that shows us how Jesus began His public ministry. He didn’t wait for everything to be perfect. He stepped into the everyday lives of fishermen and called them to something eternal. Listen to God’s Word:
Matthew 4:12-23 (NIV)
12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee.
13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali – 14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles –
16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
20 At once they left their nets and followed him.
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them,
22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.
Section 6. Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer
Let’s pray together:
Lord Jesus, just as You called Your first disciples by the sea, You call us today – not because we are worthy, but because You are gracious. We pray for those feeling lost in darkness – that they would see Your great light. We lift up those who are weary, sick, or struggling – may Your healing touch restore them. Give us courage to leave behind what holds us back and follow You wholeheartedly.
Congregational Response:
“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
Section 7. Offering
Giving is an act of worship – a way to honor God with what He has entrusted to us. It’s not about the amount; it’s about the heart behind it. As we give today, let’s do so joyfully, knowing that our gifts help share the light of Christ in our community and beyond.
Let’s pray:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your endless generosity toward us. We bring these gifts as an offering of worship, asking that You use them to advance Your kingdom. Bless this offering, and bless each person who gave. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Section 8. Special Music
Now, let’s enjoy a special time of worship through music. Our choir will minister to us with “The Summons” – a song that echoes the call of Jesus in our Scripture today.

Blog Post:
A Message of Hope for Those Who Can’t Be With Us Today
Hello, dear friends – whether you’re reading this from home, a hospital room, or miles away from church. Even if you can’t gather with us in person today, please know this: you are not forgotten. You are loved, you are prayed for, and you are still very much a part of our church family.
This week, we’ve been reflecting on Matthew 4:12-23 – a passage that reminds us Jesus meets us right where we are. He called fishermen while they worked. He brought light to those in shadows. And He’s still doing that today – no matter where you are or what you’re facing.
Finding Purpose Right Where You Are
Maybe you feel isolated. Maybe life looks different than it used to. But your faith hasn’t expired. Your purpose hasn’t faded. In fact, some of the most powerful ministry happens not in a crowded room, but in quiet moments with Jesus.
You don’t need a pulpit to pray.
You don’t need a microphone to worship.
You don’t need to leave your house to love someone well.
Jesus is with you – right here, right now – and He still has meaningful work for you to do.
A Simple Challenge This Week
Let me encourage you with one small, soul-nourishing idea each day this week:
- Monday: Read Matthew 4:12-23 slowly. Underline one phrase that stands out to you.
- Tuesday: Pray for one person God brings to mind – maybe a neighbor, a family member, or even someone you’ve lost touch with.
- Wednesday: Send a text or note to someone just to say, “I’m praying for you today.”
- Thursday: Listen to a worship song that reminds you of God’s presence. Let it fill your space and your spirit.
- Friday: Spend five minutes in silence, listening for God’s voice. He still speaks.
- Saturday: Write down one thing you’re thankful for – even if it feels small.
- Sunday: Join our online service, even for just part of it. You belong here.
You Are Not Alone
We might not see you in the pew, but we feel you in our prayers. We might not shake your hand at the door, but we hold you in our hearts. Wherever you are – whatever you’re going through – you are seen, loved, and deeply valued.
This isn’t a second-class faith. This is real discipleship, right where you are.
A Closing Prayer Just for You
Heavenly Father, we lift up every person reading these words today. Wrap them in Your peace. Remind them that they are not alone – You are with them, and so are we. Give them strength for today, hope for tomorrow, and a renewed sense of purpose right where they are. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
You’re doing better than you know. Keep trusting. Keep praying. Keep shining right where you are.
With love,
Your church family
If this message encouraged you, share it with someone who could use a little hope today.
