What if the secret to explosive church growth isn’t more strategy, but one dangerous, counterintuitive attitude most leaders quietly avoid?
Let me ask you something… What if the very thing holding your church back?
Is the one thing Jesus embraced fully?
- Not better programs.
- Not louder worship.
- Not another outreach campaign.
But a mindset.
In Philippians 2:5 11, Paul pulls back the curtain and shows us the raw, unfiltered strategy of Heaven:
👉 Jesus lowered Himself…
👉 Served when He deserved to be served…
👉 Obeyed when it cost everything…
And because of that? God lifted Him higher than anyone else.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth most churches ignore:
Growth in God’s Kingdom doesn’t come from climbing up…
It comes from kneeling down.
When a church adopts the mindset of Christ humility, obedience, servant leadership something powerful happens:
- People feel it.
- Lives change.
- Walls come down.
- And God moves.
This isn’t theory. It’s the blueprint. And if you build your church on it…
- You won’t have to beg people to come.
- They’ll be drawn to what God is doing.

Friends, it’s so good to connect with you today! You know, life can throw a lot at us, can’t it? We’re often caught up in trying to get ahead, to be seen, to secure our place in the world. But what if the secret to true fulfillment, to real joy, is found in a completely different direction? What if it’s found not in grasping, but in giving? Not in rising, but in humbling ourselves?
Today, we’re going to dive into a passage from the Bible that completely turns our worldly understanding upside down. It’s a powerful picture of Jesus Christ himself, and it’s an invitation for us to adopt the very attitude that defined His life. This isn’t just an old story; it’s a blueprint for how we can truly live, truly love, and truly make a difference in a world that desperately needs hope. It’s about understanding the incredible journey of our Savior and letting that journey transform our own hearts.
This incredible passage, Philippians 2:5-11, recounts the mind-boggling journey of Jesus Christ from His divine glory to the depths of human suffering and death, and then to His ultimate exaltation. It describes how Jesus, though fully God, chose not to cling to His divine privileges. Instead, He willingly emptied Himself, taking on the form of a servant, becoming fully human. He humbled Himself completely, even to the point of dying the most shameful death imaginable: death on a cross. But this wasn’t the end of the story! Because of His obedience and profound humility, God the Father highly exalted Him, bestowing upon Him a name above every name, ensuring that one day, every single knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, all to the glorious praise of God the Father. It’s a breathtaking narrative of divine self-sacrifice and ultimate triumph!
Scripture Philippians 2:5-11 (NIV)
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Friends, aren’t those verses just absolutely incredible? They paint such a vivid picture of our Lord! It’s not just a theological statement; it’s a living, breathing example for every single one of us. So, as we dive deeper, let’s wrap our hearts and minds around this powerful truth.
Sermon Title: The Upside-Down Life?
Expository Sermon Outline
I. The Mindset of Christ: Letting Go to Live (Philippians 2:5-6)
- Have the Same Mindset: This section challenges us to adopt the radical way Jesus thought about Himself and His status. He didn’t see His equality with God as something to hold onto for personal gain or privilege. Instead, His divine nature informed His willingness to sacrifice, not His desire to dominate. It’s about shifting our focus from what we can gain to what we can give, embracing a spirit of humility in all our relationships.
II. The Action of Christ: The Ultimate Act of Humility (Philippians 2:7-8)
- He Emptied Himself: Here, we see Jesus moving from divine thought to concrete action. He literally “made Himself nothing,” taking on the form of a servant and becoming fully human. He wasn’t just like a man; He became a man, experiencing all the limitations and struggles we do. And His humility didn’t stop there; it led Him to the most profound act of obedience death on a cross, a public, agonizing, and humiliating death. This shows us the depth of His love and commitment to our salvation.
III. The Exaltation of Christ: God’s Glorious Response (Philippians 2:9-11)
- God Highly Exalted Him: Because of Christ’s profound humility and obedience, God the Father didn’t leave Him in the grave or in obscurity. Instead, God demonstrated His incredible justice and love by raising Jesus up, giving Him the highest possible position and a name that outshines all others. This is the ultimate promise of our faith that humility, service, and sacrifice, when done in Christ, lead to ultimate glory and recognition. One day, every person will bow before Him and declare His Lordship, bringing glory to God the Father.
