Exodus 17:1-7 When You Thirst You Lose Faith?

More Proof God is Everywhere!

Bonus: Hannah Sings: Go Rest High Upon That Mountain

Remember God Is Still Faithful To You! Even in seasons of complaint and doubt, the Lord provides living water-and teaches us to trust Him one step at a time.

Friend,

Have you ever walked through a “desert” season, where you prayed, but the answer didn’t come as quickly as you hoped?

In Exodus 17:1-7, the Israelites were thirsty, afraid, and frustrated. They questioned Moses. They questioned their future. They even questioned whether God was with them at all.

And yet-God was.

Water flowed from a rock. Not because the people were faithful… but because God was.

That’s important for us as leaders. Every church walks through dry seasons-financial strain, low attendance, spiritual fatigue, unanswered prayers. People may grumble. They may doubt. But this passage reminds us: growth doesn’t come from perfect people. It comes from a faithful God.

When we preach messages like this, we teach our congregations how to trust God in the wilderness. And churches grow-not just in numbers-but in spiritual maturity.

People are thirsty today. They’re looking for living water. And when we consistently point them to Christ-the Rock who provides-we become a place of hope in the desert.

And if this message encouraged you, Pastor Essentials members receive three complete, lectionary-based sermons every week-along with Bible studies, service flows, and ready-to-use scripts-so you can prepare in hours, not days. We’d love to walk alongside you. Sign up for our Free 10-Day Trial and gain access to a complete service, sermon, and Bible study you can use right away.

You don’t have to preach alone. And you don’t have to walk through dry seasons alone either.

Grace and peace to you,

Christopher Sciullo

Bible Study: They Almost Stoned the Pastor…

Until Water Exploded From a Rock (Exodus 17:1-7) What Do You Do When the People You Led Out of Bondage Start Questioning If God Is Even With You?

Have you ever been blamed for something that wasn’t your fault?

Moses had.

He obeyed God. He led faithfully. He showed up every day. And now the very people he risked everything for were ready to stone him because they were thirsty.

But if we’re honest, we understand them a little, don’t we?

When life gets dry… when prayers feel unanswered… when the path God called us to walk feels harder than expected… it’s easy to ask, “Lord, are You even with us?”

Exodus 17 isn’t just about water. It’s about trust.

The Israelites were free from Egypt-but they weren’t yet free from fear. They had seen miracles-but their memories were short when their mouths were dry.

And Moses? He did something every spiritual leader must learn to do. He cried out to God instead of arguing with the crowd.

And God responded.

  • Not with anger.
  • Not with abandonment.
  • But with provision.

Water from a rock.

Sometimes the hardest seasons in ministry are the very places where God reveals His faithfulness most clearly. The desert becomes the classroom. The rock becomes the reminder. And the thirst becomes the invitation to deeper trust.

That’s where discipleship grows-not when everything is easy, but when we learn to trust God in the dry places.

Bible Study and Sermon Outline

Sermon Title: “Is the Lord Among Us or Not?” – Finding Living Water in Dry Seasons

(Exodus 17:1-7, NIV)

1. When the Journey Gets Dry (Verses 1-3) – Thirst Reveals What’s in Our Hearts

The Israelites traveled as the Lord commanded, yet they found no water. Obedience did not exempt them from hardship. Their physical thirst quickly turned into spiritual doubt. Instead of remembering God’s past faithfulness, they questioned His present presence.

Dry seasons often expose what we truly believe about God. Do we trust Him only when provision is visible? Or do we trust Him when the ground feels cracked beneath our feet?

2. When Leaders Feel Overwhelmed (Verse 4) – Crying Out Is Not Weakness

Moses didn’t defend himself. He didn’t lash out. He cried out to the Lord.

Every pastor, ministry leader, and disciple will face moments when the pressure feels heavy. But this verse reminds us: the safest place for our frustration is in honest prayer. Spiritual maturity isn’t pretending everything is fine. It’s running to God when it’s not.

Healthy churches grow when leaders model dependence, not perfection.

3. When God Provides in Unexpected Ways (Verses 5-6) – The Rock Was Already There

God instructed Moses to strike the rock, and water flowed. The provision wasn’t manufactured-it was revealed.

Often, God’s answer is already present before we see it. The Rock stood in the wilderness long before the people complained. And throughout Scripture, the Rock becomes a picture of Christ-steady, faithful, life-giving.

God may not remove every desert, but He always provides what we need within it.

4. When We Name Our Doubts (Verse 7) – Testing Turns into Testimony

The place was called Massah and Meribah because the people tested the Lord, asking, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

That question echoes into every generation. Yet for believers, the cross answers it forever: Yes, He is among us. Yes, He is faithful. Yes, He provides.

When we teach our congregations to move from testing to trusting, from grumbling to gratitude, from fear to faith-discipleship deepens.

And that’s how churches grow-not just larger, but stronger.

In every dry season, God is shaping something in us.
He’s not just giving water.
He’s building trust.

Bringing Living Water to a Thirsty People

When You Step Into the Pulpit,  you stand to preach, you’re not just delivering words. You’re carrying the quiet prayers of your people.

You’re carrying the mother who feels spiritually dry. The couple wondering if God is still near. The young believer asking, “Is the Lord really among us?”

Just like Israel in the wilderness, many walk into church thirsty.

They’re longing for renewed hope. They’re desiring deeper faith. They’re yearning to hear God’s Word in a way that truly reaches their hearts.

Imagine the Water Flowing

Now picture what happens when God meets them there. Imagine eyes lighting up with understanding. Hearts softening with trust. Spirits strengthened with courage to live out their faith on Monday morning-not just Sunday.

That’s what happens when the Word comes alive. Not because of polished outlines. Not because of perfect delivery. But because the Rock is struck-and living water flows.

This message was created to help you do exactly that.

Not just give another sermon. But help create a holy moment. A spark where God’s Word refreshes dry souls and reminds your congregation that He is still faithful.
