Bible Study: Matthew 14:22-33: Walking on the Water
Introduction to Matthew 14:22-33
This passage follows immediately after the miraculous feeding of the five thousand. It serves as a profound demonstration of Jesus’ divine authority over the physical world and a poignant lesson on the nature of faith. In this narrative, we see the disciples caught in a literal and spiritual storm, transitioning from the mountain-top experience of a miracle to the deep-water testing of their trust in Christ.
The Events of the Passage
The narrative begins with Jesus instructing His disciples to cross the Sea of Galilee while He withdraws to a mountain to pray in solitude. During the night, a violent storm tosses the boat, leaving the disciples terrified. In the early morning hours, Jesus approaches them by walking on the water. When they cry out in fear, thinking He is a ghost, Jesus reassures them.
Peter, prompted by a mix of courage and faith, asks to join Jesus on the water. While Peter initially succeeds, he begins to sink when he shifts his focus to the wind and waves. Jesus immediately rescues him, they return to the boat, the storm ceases, and the disciples worship Jesus as the Son of God.
The NIV Scripture Text
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Summary Points for Reflection:
- Obedience does not guarantee a smooth sea, but it guarantees Christ’s intercession.
- Fear is dismissed not by a change in weather, but by the presence of the “I Am.”
- Focus determines your stability; keep your eyes on the Master, not the storm.
- Worship is the only right response to the manifest power and mercy of Jesus.

The Sermon: Finding Courage in the Middle of Your Storm
1. Verses 22-24: Obedience Doesn’t Mean You Won’t Face Waves
In this first part of the story, we see something very interesting. Jesus actually forces the disciples to get into the boat. He sends them ahead while He goes to pray. Now, you would think that if you are doing exactly what Jesus told you to do, you’d have smooth sailing, right? But the Bible says the boat was buffeted by waves because the wind was against it. This section shows us that sometimes, you can be right in the center of God’s will and still find yourself in a heavy storm. It’s not a sign of failure; it’s a sign of a journey in progress.
Personal Thoughts: I’ve often sat by the ocean and watched the waves roll in, thinking about how quickly the weather can turn. It’s a lot like our lives. One minute everything is calm, and the next, you’re rowing against a wind you didn’t see coming. My heart goes out to anyone who feels like they are rowing as hard as they can but making no progress. Just remember, even when the wind is against you, God is for you.
Personal Commentary: The Greek word for “buffeted” here literally means “tortured.” The disciples weren’t just experiencing a little rain; they were exhausted and struggling. It’s important to note that Jesus was on the mountain praying. He hadn’t forgotten them. In your life, the “wind” might be a health crisis, a financial struggle, or a broken relationship. The wind is real, but so is the intercession of Jesus on your behalf.
Personal Commentary on Christian Discipleship: Being a disciple means following Jesus even when the destination is hidden by the clouds. Discipleship is not a bypass around life’s problems; it is the process of learning to trust the Captain while the boat is rocking. If we only follow Him when the water is glass, we aren’t really following Him; we are just enjoying the view. True discipleship is forged in the middle of the lake, at three o’clock in the morning, when the shore is nowhere to be seen.
Personal Reflection Commentary on Spiritual Growth: Growth usually doesn’t happen on the mountaintop; it happens in the valley—or in this case, in the storm. We grow when our self-sufficiency is exhausted. When you realize you can’t row your way out of the problem, you finally become open to the miracle God wants to perform. The storm is not an interruption to your spiritual growth; it is the very environment God is using to produce it.
Remember: We must row through the storm to grow through the storm. (This means that your persistence in the middle of difficulty is the very tool God uses to mature your character.)
Ask Yourself This Question? Am I willing to trust God’s heart even when I can’t see His hand in the middle of my current struggle?
