Romans 10:5-15: The Message of Faith

Introduction to the Scripture

Friends, today we are looking at one of the most beautiful and encouraging passages in all of God’s Word. In Romans 10:5-15, the Apostle Paul isn’t just giving us a theological lecture; he is sharing the heartbeat of the Gospel. He wants us to understand that God has made the way to Him incredibly simple and accessible. You don’t have to climb a mountain or cross an ocean to find God’s love it is right here, waiting to be received in your heart and shared with your voice.

The Context of the Message

In these verses, Paul is contrasting the “righteousness that is by the law” with the “righteousness that is by faith.” He explains that while the law required perfect performance, the Gospel requires a personal response. Paul emphasizes that salvation is now available to everyone, regardless of their background, and he concludes with a powerful call to action: the world can only believe this Good News if we are willing to go and tell them.

Romans 10:5-15 (NIV)

5 Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.” 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim:

9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Sermon: Faith is Not a Work, It’s a Welcome!

1. Faith is Closer Than You Think (Verses 5-8)

In these first few verses, Paul is trying to lower the “barrier to entry” for every person listening. He contrasts the heavy burden of trying to be perfect under the law with the incredible ease of simply trusting in what Jesus has already done. He uses these vivid images ascending to heaven or descending into the deep to show that we don’t have to go on some epic, heroic quest to find God. The Good News isn’t a secret hidden at the top of a mountain; it is a gift that has been brought right to your front door. It’s “near you,” which means it’s accessible to anyone, regardless of their background or how many mistakes they’ve made.

Personal Thoughts: I’ve met so many people who feel like they aren’t “religious” enough or “spiritual” enough to talk to God. They feel like they’re standing at the bottom of a skyscraper looking up, wondering how they’ll ever get to the top. But these verses remind me that Jesus is the one who took the elevator down to us. We don’t have to find Him; we just have to stop running from Him. It’s such a relief to realize that the pressure is off it’s not about what you can do for God, but what He has already done for you.

Personal Commentary: When Paul quotes the Old Testament here, he is illustrating that the “Word” is an intimate reality. The Gospel isn’t a philosophy to be debated in ivory towers; it’s a living truth meant for the kitchen table and the workplace. By saying the word is “in your mouth and in your heart,” Paul is showing that God has removed every obstacle. The only thing left to do is respond to the proximity of His grace. It’s a message of extreme convenience because God wants no one to have an excuse for missing out on His love.

Personal Commentary on Christian Discipleship: Discipleship begins the moment we stop trying to impress God with our performance. True following starts with a posture of receiving. If you want to grow as a follower of Jesus, you have to first accept that you are a beloved child who didn’t earn your way into the family. A disciple isn’t someone who has figured out how to climb to heaven; a disciple is someone who has been found by the One who came down from heaven.

Personal Reflection Commentary on Spiritual Growth: Growth happens when the “nearness” of the Word starts to influence your daily decisions. Spiritual maturity isn’t about knowing more facts about the Bible; it’s about the Word moving from your head to your heart and finally to your hands. When you realize God is already near, you stop searching for “mountain top experiences” and start finding His presence in the ordinary moments of your life. That is where real, lasting growth takes root.

Remember: We don’t search for the Word to find God; we let the Word find us so we can stop searching. This reminds us that God’s grace is a gift to be accepted, not a prize to be hunted.

Ask Yourself This Question? Am I still trying to climb a mountain to reach God, or am I ready to welcome the Word that is already standing right next to me?
