Introduction to Scripture
Today, we’re going to explore a passage from Ephesians that teaches us how to live as followers of Christ. Paul writes to the believers in Ephesus, encouraging them to live differently from the world around them. He reminds them that their actions and words should reflect their faith in Jesus. This passage is a call to live a life of love, truth, and kindness. It’s about building each other up and letting go of bitterness, anger, and falsehood. Let’s dive into the Scripture and see what God wants to teach us today.
Ephesians 4:25-5:2 (NIV)
25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.
28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
1 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children
2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Intercessory Prayer
Loving Father, we come to You asking for the strength to live out Your Word in our daily lives. Help us to speak truthfully and act with kindness and compassion. Remove any bitterness or anger that may have taken root in our hearts. Teach us to forgive as You have forgiven us. May we follow the example of Jesus, walking in love and serving others. Bless our efforts to build up those around us and to share Your love with the world. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Congregational Prayer Response
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word that guides and shapes us. Help us to live as Your children, speaking truth and showing kindness. Fill our hearts with love and forgiveness. May our lives be a reflection of Your grace. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Sermon Introduction
Good morning, everyone! Today, we are diving into a passage that has the power to transform our lives and communities. Imagine a world where people speak truthfully, handle anger with grace, and lift each other up with their words. This is the vision that Paul paints for us in Ephesians 4:25-5:2. It’s not just a set of rules but a blueprint for living a life that reflects the love and light of Christ. As we explore this passage, let’s open our hearts to the possibility of real change — both in our personal lives and in the world around us. Let’s discover how we can be the hands and feet of Jesus, bringing His love and grace to a hurting world.
Historical Context and Impact
Ephesians was written by the Apostle Paul around 60-62 A.D. while he was imprisoned in Rome. It was a letter to the church in Ephesus, a major city in what is now Turkey, known for its diverse population and influential culture.
The early church in Ephesus faced challenges similar to those we face today: cultural differences, temptations, and the struggle to live out their faith in a secular world. Paul’s words were meant to unify the believers, encouraging them to live as a family of God, embodying the values of truth, kindness, and love.
Today, this passage continues to resonate with us, reminding us of the timeless truth that unity and love in Christ can overcome any division or strife. The message of Ephesians calls us to be a living testimony of God’s grace in a world that desperately needs hope and healing.
