Introduction to Scripture

Today, we will look at a powerful passage from the book of John. In John 6:35-51, Jesus speaks to the crowd about the true bread of life. He explains that He is the bread that came down from heaven and offers eternal life to those who believe in Him. This passage is a reminder that Jesus is our source of life and nourishment, and through Him, we find true fulfillment and hope.

NIV Bible Verse: John 6:35-51

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.
37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.
38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.
40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered.
44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.
45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.
46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father.
47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.
48 I am the bread of life.
49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.
50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.
51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

Sermon Introduction

When Jesus spoke to the crowd, He declared, “I am the bread of life.” Now, we all know bread is a staple food. Every culture around the world has some form of bread. It fills us and gives us strength. But Jesus wasn’t talking about the kind of bread you buy at the store. He was talking about something much deeper and more lasting. He was talking about Himself as the source of spiritual nourishment. Just like bread satisfies our hunger, Jesus satisfies our deepest needs. This passage reminds us that real life and satisfaction come from knowing Jesus, trusting Him, and letting Him fill us every day.

Setting the Scene Socially and Historically

In John 6, we find Jesus speaking to a crowd that had just seen Him perform the miracle of feeding over five thousand people with just five loaves and two fish. These people lived in a time when food wasn’t always easy to come by. Hunger was a constant companion for many. So, when they heard about Jesus, the man who could make food appear out of thin air, they flocked to Him. They were looking for a solution to their physical needs, but Jesus wanted to address a need that was much deeper. Today, we still see people chasing after things that don’t satisfy. We have more than we need, yet many of us feel empty inside. Jesus’ words are a reminder that while our circumstances might change, our true needs haven’t. Just as the people in Jesus’ time needed something more than physical bread, we need more than the temporary pleasures of this world. We need the Bread of Life.

Sermon Title: Discover the Bread That Satisfies Forever!

Sermon Outline

I. The Bread of Life (John 6:35)

  • Jesus’ Declaration: Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.” This is one of the seven “I am” statements in John’s Gospel, where Jesus reveals His divine nature and mission.
  • Spiritual Satisfaction: Jesus offers not just physical sustenance but spiritual fulfillment. He promises that whoever comes to Him will never hunger or thirst spiritually.

II. Misunderstanding and Seeking Signs (John 6:36-40)

  • The Crowd’s Response: The people were focused on the physical miracle of bread rather than the spiritual truth Jesus was teaching.
  • Jesus’ Assurance: He assures them that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life and be raised on the last day.

III. Jesus, the True Bread from Heaven (John 6:41-46)

  • Complaints of the Jews: The crowd murmured because they knew Jesus’ earthly family and couldn’t understand His heavenly claim.
  • Divine Drawing: Jesus explains that coming to Him is a result of being drawn by the Father, emphasizing the necessity of God’s work in our hearts.

IV. Eternal Life through Jesus (John 6:47-51)

  • Promise of Eternal Life: Jesus reaffirms that belief in Him leads to eternal life, contrasting the temporary life-giving manna eaten by the Israelites in the desert.
  • Living Bread: Jesus identifies Himself as the living bread, offering His flesh for the life of the world, pointing to His sacrifice on the cross.

This passage from John 6 invites us to reflect on what truly satisfies our souls. As we meditate on these words, let’s seek Jesus, the Bread of Life, who fills our deepest hunger and gives us eternal life. Remember, it’s not about what we do but about who we know—Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
