Hello, friends! I am so incredibly glad you’re taking a few moments out of your busy day to pause, reflect, and spend some time in God’s Word. Growing in our relationship with God isn’t about perfectly following a complicated set of religious rules; it’s about learning to trust Him more each and every day, step by step. Today, we are going to look at a beautiful and very relatable passage from the book of Exodus. Have you ever felt like you were walking through a dry season, wondering if God is really there or if He truly understands what you are going through? The Israelites certainly felt that way. Let’s look at how God met them in their deepest place of physical and emotional thirst, and how He still provides for us today.
A Thirsty People in the Desert
In this passage, we find the Israelites journeying through the desert, following God’s leading, but they suddenly find themselves setting up camp in a place with absolutely no water. Naturally, panic sets in. Instead of trusting the God who just parted the Red Sea for them, they turn their frustration and fear against their leader, Moses. Moses, feeling overwhelmed and at the end of his rope, cries out to God for help. In a beautiful display of grace, God doesn’t punish them for their complaining. Instead, He instructs Moses to take his staff and strike a specific rock at Horeb. When Moses obeys, fresh water flows out from the solid rock to quench the thirst of the entire community. It’s a powerful reminder that God can bring life and provision out of the most impossible, hard situations.
Here are a few things to keep in mind as you read:
- God’s leading sometimes includes dry places, but His provision is always guaranteed.
- Our natural response is often to complain, but our spiritual response should be to pray.
- God responds to our greatest needs with abundant, life-giving grace.

1 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?” 3 But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”
4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.” 5 The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Friends, isn’t it true that sometimes doing exactly what God asks still lands us in a difficult place? In these opening verses, the Israelites are following God’s leading step by step, yet they end up in a camp with absolutely no water. When our resources dry up whether it’s our finances, our emotional energy, or our patience our very first instinct is often panic, followed closely by complaining.
It is so easy to judge the Israelites for grumbling against Moses and forgetting how God just rescued them from Egypt. But if we are honest, we do the exact same thing in our own lives. When we hit a dry season, we often question God’s goodness and start looking for someone to blame. God wants us to learn that the dry seasons aren’t a sign that He has abandoned us; rather, they are a profound opportunity to lean on Him more completely and deepen our relationship with Him.
2. Exodus 17:4-5 – Turning Our Panic Into Prayer
I absolutely love Moses’ response here. He is completely overwhelmed, facing a crowd of angry, thirsty, and terrified people who are at the end of their ropes. Instead of lashing out at them, arguing, or trying to fix an impossible problem in his own strength, Moses takes his frustration and fear straight to God. He cries out, “What am I to do?” That is a beautifully honest prayer!
God’s response is so gentle, warm, and grace-filled. He doesn’t scold Moses for not having the answers, and He doesn’t punish the Israelites for their bad attitudes. Instead, He gives Moses clear, step-by-step instructions. He invites Moses to step out in faith, take his staff a tangible reminder of God’s past faithfulness and walk forward. When we feel overwhelmed, God simply asks us to bring our honest, messy feelings to Him and let Him guide our next steps.
3. Exodus 17:6-7 – The Rock of Our Provision
God tells Moses to strike the solid rock at Horeb, and from that hard, unyielding place, life-giving water comes gushing out to satisfy the entire community. It completely defies all human logic! God loves to provide for us in ways that make it absolutely clear the blessing came from His loving hand, not our own striving or cleverness.
The passage ends with the sobering reality that the Israelites named the place after their quarreling, asking, “Is the Lord among us or not?” Friends, even when we doubt, even when we question if God is really there, He remains incredibly faithful. He continues to pour out His love and provision for us. When you look at the hard, unyielding situations in your own life today, trust that God is absolutely with you and that He can bring refreshing streams of grace from the most unexpected places.
