Here, Jesus speaks a difficult truth to the religious leaders, but hidden within it is a wonderful promise for us. He explains that the kingdom of God will be given to a people who will produce its fruit. The ending of this passage is heartbreaking because the religious leaders understood exactly what Jesus was saying, yet they completely missed the point. Instead of letting Jesus’ words soften their hearts and lead them to repentance, they hardened their hearts and clung tightly to their own power and status. They were so concerned with how they looked to the crowd that they completely missed the Savior standing right in front of them.
Let this be an encouraging challenge for our own spiritual journey. Whenever we read God’s Word or hear His voice stirring in our spirits, we have a choice in how we respond. Let’s be a fellowship of believers who always keep our hearts soft, open, and teachable. When God gently corrects us or calls us to step out in faith, let’s respond with a willing “Yes, Lord,” trusting that His plans for our lives are always rooted in His boundless love for us.
