Fellowship Bible Study & Sermon Outline: Exodus 33:12-23 (NIV)

The heart of this beautiful passage is about intimacy with our Creator. It’s a powerful reminder that God doesn’t just give us a map for our lives; He offers us Himself as our ultimate guide. When we, like Moses, passionately seek to know God and ask for His presence to go with us, we open the door to a life filled with purpose, joy, and an overwhelming sense of peace.

Never Walk Alone

Embracing the Comfort and Guidance of God’s Presence

We are stepping into a deeply personal, relatable moment between a leader and his Lord. Moses is facing a massive task, trying to lead a multitude of people, and he realizes he simply cannot take another step without the assurance that God is right there beside him.

In this moving dialogue, Moses boldly asks God for confirmation of His favor and pleads for God’s presence to accompany the Israelites on their journey. God graciously responds by promising that His presence will indeed go with them, granting them rest. Seeking even more assurance, Moses asks to see God’s glory, and God compassionately protects Moses in the cleft of a rock while revealing His goodness and mercy to him.

The Scripture: Exodus 33:12-23 (NIV)

12 Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”

14 The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

15 Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”

17 And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.” 18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.” 19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.” 21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”

Admitting Our Need for His Direction Exodus 33:12-13

Have you ever felt completely overwhelmed by what is standing in front of you? Moses felt exactly the same way. He was tasked with leading a massive group of people, and he realized he simply could not do it on his own. He goes to God with incredible honesty, essentially saying, “Lord, you have given me this assignment, but I need to know you are with me in it.”

It is perfectly okay to admit to God that we do not have all the answers. In fact, that is exactly where He wants us to be. When we humbly ask God to teach us His ways, we open our hearts to a deeper, more trusting relationship with Him. We find grace in His sight simply by acknowledging our total dependence on His loving guidance.

The Beautiful Promise of Rest Exodus 33:14

God’s response to Moses is one of the most comforting verses in the entire Bible. He doesn’t hand Moses a detailed map or a rigid step-by-step formula for success. Instead, He offers something far better: His own presence. God simply says, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

In our busy, demanding lives, true rest can feel impossible to find. But God reminds us here that real peace does not come from having everything figured out or checking off every box on our to-do list. True, soul-deep rest comes from knowing that the Creator of the universe is walking right beside us every single day.

Living a Distinctive Life Exodus 33:15-17

Moses completely understands the value of what God is offering. He tells God, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” He knows that without God, they are just like everyone else. What makes them unique, and what marks them as God’s beloved children, is the reality of God dwelling with them and moving among them.

As followers of Christ, this is our calling, too. We are not meant to blend in with the anxiety and fear of the world around us. Our lives should look distinctly different because we are carrying the joy, peace, and love of God within us. When others look at how we live, they should see the unmistakable, warm evidence of His presence.

Desiring to See His Goodness Exodus 33:18-23

After receiving the promise of God’s presence, Moses boldly asks for even more: he asks to see God’s glory. It is a beautiful picture of a heart that just cannot get enough of God! God gently tells Moses that while he cannot see His face, He will cause all His goodness and mercy to pass before him, physically protecting Moses in the cleft of the rock.

God is so incredibly protective of us. He reveals Himself to us in ways we can handle, constantly showing us His compassion and grace. When we actively seek to know Him more, He always responds by showing us His goodness. We are sheltered in His hand, safe and secure, as He lovingly reveals His character to our hearts.

The “Living It Out” Action Plan (Best for the application-focused format that provides real-world examples and clear next steps for daily life.)

Friends, it is one thing to learn about God’s incredible promises, but the real joy comes when we begin to live them out. When we take these beautiful truths from Exodus and apply them to our daily routines, our relationship with God begins to flourish in amazing ways. Practical application is simply asking, “What does this mean for me on a Tuesday morning?” Let’s look at how we can walk hand-in-hand with Him this week.

Embrace Honesty in Your Prayers

Trading Our Personal Plans for His Loving Guidance

When we feel overwhelmed, our first instinct is often to try and fix things on our own or pretend we have it all together. But God invites us to be completely honest with Him about our fears and uncertainties. You don’t have to use fancy words; just talk to Him like a trusted friend who loves you deeply.

Practical Application: Before you even get out of bed tomorrow morning, take just one minute to pray a simple prayer of surrender. You might say, “Lord, I have a lot on my plate today, and I don’t have all the answers. Please guide my steps, teach me Your ways, and give me the wisdom I need for today.”

Create Space for True Rest

Finding God’s Peace in a Hectic World

We often think of rest as simply getting enough sleep or taking a vacation, but the rest God promises is a deep peace for our souls. It is a quiet confidence that no matter how chaotic the day becomes, He is right there with us. We have to intentionally pause to recognize His presence so that His peace can calm our anxious hearts.

Practical Application: Build a “breathing space” into your daily schedule. For example, before you walk into your house after a long day of work, turn off the car radio, sit in silence for two minutes, and thank God that His presence is going inside with you. Let His peace settle over you before you transition to your evening.

Let Your Light Shine Brightly

Showing the World the Joy of God’s Presence

People are looking for hope, and the best way we can share that hope is by how we live our lives. When we carry God’s presence, we handle stress differently, we treat others with more grace, and we possess a joy that circumstances cannot steal. That beautiful difference is exactly what draws others to want to know the God we serve.

Practical Application: Look for an opportunity to respond with grace when things go wrong. If your order is incorrect at a restaurant or a coworker makes a frustrating mistake, consciously choose to respond with kindness and a gentle smile. Your calm, loving reaction in a stressful moment is a powerful reflection of God’s presence living inside of you.

Look for Daily Glimpses of Grace

Recognizing God’s Goodness in the Everyday Moments

Just like Moses wanted to see God’s glory, we can actively look for evidence of His goodness all around us. God is constantly showing us mercy, protecting us, and providing for us, but we often move too fast to notice. When we slow down and look for His hand at work, our hearts are filled with gratitude and awe.

Practical Application: Start a simple gratitude habit this week. Keep a notebook by your bed, or use the notes app on your phone, and write down just one specific way you saw God’s goodness that day. It could be a kind word from a friend, a beautiful sunset, or a problem that was surprisingly resolved. Over time, this trains your heart to constantly look for His glory!
