Welcome to the Congregation

Good morning, Church family! It is such a blessing to gather with you today as we seek God’s presence and His purpose for our lives. Today, we are diving into a powerful message from Hebrews 10:5-10—a passage that invites us to see Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment of God’s plan and to respond with hearts full of surrender and obedience. Let’s open our hearts to hear what God has to say to us today through His Word.

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You in awe of Your love and the perfect plan You set in motion through Jesus Christ. Thank You for the sacrifice that brings us near to You and for the example of obedience that transforms our hearts. Holy Spirit, open our minds to understand Your Word today, and may it shape us to live fully for Your glory. We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Introduction to Scripture

In the book of Hebrews, the author often reminds us of Jesus’ unique and complete role as our Savior and High Priest. Today’s passage, Hebrews 10:5-10, reveals Jesus’ purpose in coming to the world—not to offer animal sacrifices like in the old covenant, but to do the will of God once and for all. This Scripture reminds us of the joy and power of living in obedience to God’s will.

The Events in Hebrews 10:5-10

This passage highlights Jesus’ response to God’s call. Quoting from Psalm 40, the author shows Jesus acknowledging that God doesn’t delight in sacrifices and offerings but desires a heart surrendered to His will. Jesus declares, “Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—I have come to do your will, my God.” Through His obedience, Jesus becomes the perfect and final sacrifice, making us holy.

NIV Bible Verse: Hebrews 10:5-10

5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:
“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me;
6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings
you were not pleased.
7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—
I have come to do your will, my God.’”

8 First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law.
9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second.
10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Intercessory Prayer

Lord Jesus, we thank You for Your obedience to the Father’s will, offering Yourself as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Teach us to surrender our lives as You did, trusting fully in God’s perfect plan. We pray for all who struggle to see the power of Your grace—may their hearts be opened to Your love and transformed by Your truth. Amen.

Congregational Prayer Response

Congregation: Lord, we rejoice that through Your perfect will, we are made holy by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Help us to echo His words: “Here I am, I have come to do Your will, my God.” Amen.

Sermon: Here I Am—Living to Fulfill God’s Will

Sermon Sample Section 1: God’s Desire Beyond Sacrifices (Hebrews 10:5-6)

Explanation

The writer of Hebrews reminds us that God isn’t seeking empty rituals or sacrifices. In verse 5, Jesus declares that God prepared a body for Him, signifying the importance of relationship over ritual. Burnt offerings and sin offerings, though commanded by the law, could not fully satisfy God because they did not transform hearts. What God desires most is an obedient heart and a life surrendered to His will.

Personal Thoughts

This truth strikes at the core of our spiritual journey. It’s not about how much we give or how often we perform religious acts—it’s about the posture of our hearts. God isn’t impressed by appearances; He’s moved by our willingness to say, “Lord, I trust You and want to follow You with all I am.”

Personal Commentary

When I think of this passage, I’m reminded of how easy it is to get caught up in “doing” for God rather than “being” with God. Sacrifices are external, but surrender is internal. It’s a call to shift our focus from checking off religious tasks to cultivating a deep, transformative relationship with God.

Personal Commentary on Christian Discipleship

Christian discipleship begins here: understanding that God desires a heart that says, “Yes, Lord.” It’s not about performing but about aligning our lives with His purposes. Discipleship calls us to grow deeper in relationship, allowing our obedience to flow naturally from our love for God.

Personal Reflection Commentary on Spiritual Growth

Spiritual growth happens when we let go of striving to earn God’s favor and rest in His love. Growth requires humility—a recognition that what God desires most is not what we bring but who we are becoming in Christ.

Ask Yourself This Question

Am I offering God my heart or just my habits? How can I surrender to His will today?
