Welcome to Worship: “Welcome to Our Church Family”
Good morning, church family. It’s so wonderful to see each of you here today. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a long-time member, I want you to know that you are loved and valued. We are here today to learn from God’s Word, grow in our walk with Him, and strengthen our hearts with the wisdom that comes from above. Let’s open our hearts and minds as we seek God together.
Opening Prayer: “A Prayer for Guidance and Wisdom”
Heavenly Father, we come before You today seeking Your wisdom and grace. Help us to understand Your will and to walk in the ways that honor You. As we open Your Word, let it shape our thoughts and actions. Lead us in peace and unity, and let Your wisdom flow through us in our everyday lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Introduction to Scripture: “Seeking True Wisdom from Above”
Today, we’re going to look at a passage from the book of James, which teaches us about true wisdom. So often, we’re surrounded by worldly advice that leads us down the wrong path. But God’s wisdom is different. It’s pure, peaceful, and leads to a life of harmony with others. Let’s open our Bibles to James 3:13-18 and see what God has to say about the kind of wisdom we should seek in our lives.
The Events in the NIV Bible Verse
In this passage, James is talking about two kinds of wisdom—one that is earthly and selfish, and another that comes from God. The earthly wisdom leads to envy, selfish ambition, and disorder. But God’s wisdom is pure, peace-loving, considerate, and full of mercy. James tells us that when we live with this kind of wisdom, we bring peace and righteousness to those around us. It’s a reminder to always seek the wisdom that reflects God’s character, not the wisdom that the world often offers.
James 3:13-18 (NIV)
“The Word of the Lord”
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.
14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.
15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.
Intercessory Prayer
“A Prayer for Godly Wisdom”
Father, we come to You with humble hearts, asking for Your wisdom in all areas of our lives. We confess that sometimes we’ve sought the wrong kind of wisdom, relying on our own understanding or following the ways of the world. Please guide us with Your pure and peaceful wisdom. Help us to be peacemakers in our homes, workplaces, and communities, showing Your love and grace to everyone we meet. May we sow peace and reap righteousness, just as You have called us to do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Congregational Prayer Response
“Praying Together for God’s Wisdom”
Lord, give us hearts that seek Your wisdom,
Not the wisdom of this world, but wisdom that is pure and peace-loving.
Help us to live in humility,
To serve others with kindness and love.
May we always be peacemakers,
Sowing righteousness wherever we go.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Sermon Outline: “Worldly Wisdom vs. Godly Wisdom”
Introduction to the Sermon
Who is truly wise? In a world where everyone seems to have an opinion and there’s no shortage of “advice,” how do we know what’s true? The Bible speaks clearly about two types of wisdom: one that comes from the world and one that comes from God. Today, we will look at James 3:13-18 to learn about the characteristics of Godly wisdom and how it impacts our lives.
The Historical Context of James 3:13-18
“Wisdom in a Divided Church”
James wrote this letter to early Christians who were facing tension and division in their communities. They were living in a time when the Roman Empire ruled, and there was a constant clash between earthly power and spiritual values. People were struggling with pride, selfish ambition, and jealousy, which led to conflict. The same issues we see today—envy, selfishness, and striving for personal success—were tearing apart their relationships. James’s words are just as relevant today as they were then, because we all face the temptation to pursue the wrong kind of wisdom.
Expository Outline of James 3:13-18
Section 1: True Wisdom Begins with Humility
- Verse 13: “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”
- Key Point: True wisdom is not about showing off how much we know; it’s about living a life of humility. When we’re humble, we recognize that all wisdom comes from God, not ourselves.
- Application: Ask yourself, am I trying to look wise, or am I seeking God’s wisdom with a humble heart?
Section 2: The Dangers of Worldly Wisdom
- Verses 14-16: “But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”
- Key Point: Worldly wisdom leads to jealousy, competition, and division. It is driven by pride and selfishness, and it brings nothing but chaos and disorder.
- Application: We need to guard our hearts against envy and selfish ambition, which can destroy our relationships and communities.
Section 3: Godly Wisdom Produces Peace and Righteousness
- Verses 17-18: “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.”
- Key Point: Godly wisdom is marked by purity, peace, and mercy. It leads to lives that are filled with love and kindness, not conflict and division. When we pursue God’s wisdom, we become peacemakers who bring healing to our world.
- Application: What kind of wisdom are we sowing in our homes, workplaces, and communities? Are we sowing peace and righteousness?
Conclusion
Worldly wisdom or Godly wisdom—which will you choose? As we navigate the challenges of life, we are constantly faced with two paths. One leads to pride, conflict, and destruction. The other leads to peace, humility, and righteousness. Let’s choose the wisdom from above, and let it guide every part of our lives.
