It appears some ‘leaders’ have been less ‘guiding the flock’ and more ‘flinging them into traffic.’

Are You Tired of Feeling Lost? Discover God’s Radical Plan for True Leadership (And How YOU Fit In)!

Hey there, friend! I’ve got something incredible to share with you today from the heart of God’s Word. You know, life can often feel like a bit of a maze, right? We’re all searching for direction, for a purpose, for someone or something to truly guide us when things get tough.

I remember a time, not too long ago, when I was counseling a wonderful woman named Brenda. Brenda had always been a seeker. She’d tried so many different paths, listened to countless voices, and honestly, she was exhausted. She’d dedicated her time, her energy, even her hopes, to leaders and teachers who, despite their best intentions, left her feeling more scattered than before. Her faith felt like a patchwork quilt of conflicting advice, and she often confessed, “Pastor, I feel like a lost sheep, just wandering with no real shepherd in sight.” She craved consistency, truth, and a deep, abiding peace, but every time she thought she found it, another crisis or another flawed leader would shake her foundation.

Brenda’s story isn’t unique, is it? We’ve all felt that longing for true, unwavering guidance. We’ve all, at some point, wished for a shepherd who never gets distracted, never leads us astray, and always has our best interests at heart. Well, today, in Jeremiah 23, God is practically shouting from the heavens, “I see you! I know you feel scattered, but I have a plan! And it’s a plan that involves Me providing the perfect leadership!” This isn’t just an old story; it’s God’s timeless promise to rescue us from confusion and lead us into a life of purpose and peace. He’s not just talking about ancient Israel; He’s talking about you and me right now, promising to gather us and set over us leaders who genuinely care – and ultimately, pointing to the one Shepherd who will never fail. It’s a promise that changed Brenda’s life, and it can change yours too!

From Scattered to Secure: How God Promises Real Leadership and Lasting Peace

Hey everyone! I’m so excited to dive into God’s Word with you today! We’re going to explore a powerful passage from the book of Jeremiah, a message that’s just as relevant for us today as it was thousands of years ago. It’s all about how God steps in when leadership falters, and how He promises to gather us, guide us, and ultimately give us the peace and security we long for. Let’s open our Bibles to Jeremiah 23:1-6 and discover God’s amazing heart for us!

I. The Problem: When Shepherds Fail (Jeremiah 23:1-2)

This first section hits hard, doesn’t it? God is calling out leaders, or “shepherds,” who have done a terrible job. They haven’t just neglected the flock; they’ve actively scattered, driven away, and destroyed the very people they were supposed to care for. It’s a sobering reminder that leadership is a sacred trust, and when we fail to lead with love, wisdom, and genuine care, there are serious consequences. This isn’t just about ancient kings; it’s about anyone in a position of influence who doesn’t prioritize the well-being of those they lead.

II. The Solution: God Gathers His Scattered Sheep (Jeremiah 23:3-4)

But here’s the beautiful pivot! After exposing the problem, God immediately declares His solution. He says, “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock.” This isn’t a passive observation; it’s an active, personal intervention. God promises to bring His people back from all the places they’ve been scattered, and then – get this – He promises to place good shepherds over them. These new leaders will actually care for the flock, ensuring they are no longer afraid, dismayed, or missing. It’s a promise of restoration and competent, caring leadership that genuinely looks out for the flock!

III. The Ultimate Shepherd: A Righteous Branch (Jeremiah 23:5-6)

And now, the climax of God’s promise! Beyond the earthly shepherds, God points to an ultimate, perfect leader: a “Righteous Branch.” This is a powerful prophecy that points directly to Jesus Christ! God promises to raise up a King from David’s line who will reign wisely, administer justice, and do what is right. In His days, Judah will be saved, and Israel will live in safety. He will be known by an incredible name: “The Lord Our Righteous Savior.” This is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promise for true leadership and lasting peace – finding our security, justice, and salvation in Jesus alone!

Section 2. Call to Worship

Friends, before we go any further, let’s take a moment to quiet our hearts and fix our eyes on the One who truly guides us. Today, we’re reminded in Jeremiah 23:3 that God Himself declares, “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock together from all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture. Then they will be fruitful and increase in number.” What an incredible promise! Let’s respond together to this loving call from our faithful Shepherd.

Congregation, please respond:

Leader: The Lord has promised to gather His scattered flock.
Congregation: He will bring us back to His loving pasture!

Leader: He will raise up shepherds to care for us.
Congregation: We will no longer be afraid or dismayed!

Leader: Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch.
Congregation: In Him, Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety!

Leader: Let us worship the Lord, for He is our Righteous Savior!
Congregation: Amen!

Section 3. Opening Prayer

Let’s pray together.

Heavenly Father, we come before You today with open hearts, eager to receive Your Word and Your spirit. Thank You for gathering us here, for Your faithfulness that never wavers, even when we feel scattered or lost. We pray that Your Holy Spirit would open our ears to hear, our minds to understand, and our hearts to be transformed by Your truth today. Guide us, Lord, by Your wisdom and fill us with Your peace. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus, our Righteous Savior. Amen.

Section 4. Praise and Worship

What an incredible privilege it is to lift our voices in praise to our amazing God! As we prepare our hearts for His Word, let’s stand together and worship Him with all that we are. Whether it’s a timeless hymn or a contemporary chorus, may every note and every word be an act of adoration, inviting His presence into this place and into our lives. Let’s sing together!

Section 5. Scripture Reading

Alright, everyone, let’s turn our attention now to God’s living, active Word. Today’s message comes to us from the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah, specifically chapter 23, verses 1 through 6. This passage, while spoken to ancient Israel, carries a powerful and encouraging message for each of us today about leadership, hope, and God’s unwavering commitment to His people.

Jeremiah was prophesying during a really tough time for Judah. They were facing corruption, bad leadership, and the very real threat of exile. The “shepherds” in charge – the kings and leaders – had been irresponsible, scattering God’s flock instead of protecting them. But in the midst of this darkness, God makes a profound promise: He declares that He will personally intervene, gather His scattered people, and raise up good, caring leaders. And ultimately, He points to a future, perfect King who will rule with justice and righteousness, bringing true salvation and safety. It’s a message of hope that transcends generations!

Let’s read God’s Word together from Jeremiah 23:1-6 (NIV)

1 “Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord.
2 Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not cared for them, I will punish you for the evil you have done,” declares the Lord.
3 “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock together from all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture. Then they will be fruitful and increase in number.
4 I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or dismayed, nor will any be missing,” declares the Lord.
5 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.
6 In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The Lord Our Righteous Savior.”

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Section 6. Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer

Let’s bow our heads and lift our hearts in prayer.

Lord, we come to You today, acknowledging that sometimes, just like the people in Jeremiah’s time, we feel the effects of failed leadership, whether in our personal lives, our communities, or even on a global scale. We pray for leaders in all spheres of influence – in our governments, our schools, our workplaces, and yes, even in our churches. We ask that You would raise up men and women of integrity, wisdom, and compassion, who will truly care for those they lead, just as You promised. We pray for those who feel scattered, lost, or discouraged today, that they would experience Your gathering hand, drawing them close to Your heart. And above all, Lord, we thank You for Jesus, our ultimate Righteous Savior, who never fails and always leads us into safety and truth. Amen.

Congregational Prayer Response:

Leader: For leaders who scatter and do not care for the flock, we pray for repentance and transformation. Congregation: Lord, raise up shepherds after Your own heart!

Leader: For those who feel driven away, afraid, and dismayed. Congregation: Gather us, Lord, and bring us back to Your pasture!

Leader: For the coming of the Righteous Branch, our King who reigns wisely and justly. Congregation: We praise You, Lord Our Righteous Savior, for You are our safety and salvation!

Section 7. Offering

Friends, giving is such a vital part of our worship. It’s not just about meeting a budget; it’s an act of faith, a spiritual discipline, and a joyful response to God’s incredible generosity in our lives. When we give our tithes and offerings, we’re not just supporting the church; we’re honoring God with the first and best of what He’s given us, trusting Him to provide for all our needs. It’s a way we invest in His eternal kingdom and show our gratitude for His unfailing love and guidance.

Let’s pray a quick prayer of thanks for these gifts.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your abundant provision in our lives. We offer back to You these tithes and offerings, not out of obligation, but out of grateful hearts and as an act of worship. May these gifts be used to further Your kingdom, to care for Your flock, and to share the good news of Jesus, our Righteous Savior, with a world that desperately needs to hear it. Bless the givers and bless these gifts, we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Section 8. Special Music

Please relax and enjoy this special musical offering, a gift from some of our talented church family members, designed to draw us even closer to God’s presence.
