No matter where you’re coming from—whether you’ve had a great week or a challenging one—you’re in the right place. God’s truth is here to guide, strengthen, and uplift us.
Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts, acknowledging that You are the King of all creation. Thank You for gathering us here as one body, united in Your love. Lord, as we open Your Word today, we ask for clarity, wisdom, and understanding. Speak to our hearts, and help us see how to live out the truths You reveal. May Your Holy Spirit guide us as we listen and respond. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Introduction to Scripture
Today, we’ll focus on a moment that captures one of the most profound conversations in the Bible. It’s a conversation between Jesus and Pontius Pilate, recorded in John 18:33-37. Here, Jesus speaks about His kingdom—a kingdom unlike any we know on earth. This passage challenges us to consider the nature of truth and the role Jesus plays as King in our lives. Let’s take a closer look at what unfolded during this pivotal moment.
The Events in the Scripture
The events in John 18 take place during Jesus’ trial before His crucifixion. Pilate, a Roman governor, is questioning Jesus about whether He is a king. Jesus’ response reveals the nature of His kingdom—not one of earthly power but of eternal truth. It’s a moment of tension, misunderstanding, and deep spiritual significance. Pilate asks, “What is truth?” without realizing that Truth was standing right in front of him.
Scripture Reading: John 18:33-37 (NIV)
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
Intercessory Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the King of Truth, and Your kingdom is not of this world. Help us to understand what it means to live as citizens of Your eternal kingdom. Open our eyes to see Your truth clearly and give us courage to follow it, no matter the cost. May Your truth bring peace to our hearts and clarity to our paths. In Your holy name, we pray. Amen.
Congregational Prayer Response
Father, we humbly acknowledge that Your kingdom is greater than anything we can imagine. We confess that we often get caught up in the kingdoms of this world. Today, we choose to listen to Your truth and follow where it leads. Help us to live as people who belong to You. Amen.
