Introduction to Scripture

The Bread of Life

In the Gospel of John, chapter 6, verses 24-35, we find the crowd pursuing Jesus after the miracle of feeding the 5,000. They cross the sea to Capernaum seeking Jesus, not merely because of the miraculous signs, but because they were fed. Jesus challenges them to look beyond the physical bread and strive for the food that endures for eternal life, which He provides. He declares Himself as the bread of life, promising that whoever comes to Him will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Him will never be thirsty.

John 6:24-35 (NIV)

24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it was not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

Intercessory Prayer

Heavenly Father, as we reflect on the bread of life that Jesus offers, we bring before You those among us in need of this sustaining spiritual nourishment. For those who are spiritually hungry and seeking truth, lead them to the sustenance only Christ can provide. We pray for our community and those beyond it who are lost or disconnected from Your love. Guide them back to You, the source of eternal life and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Congregational Response

Lord, we acknowledge our deep need for the true bread from heaven. As a congregation, we commit to not only seek Your face in our personal lives but to also share the life and truth found in Christ with those around us. Help us to embody the love and sustenance You provide, reaching out to others with the hope and nourishment only You can give. Amen.

Sermon Introduction

Welcome, dear friends. Today, we delve into a passage rich with spiritual significance, where Jesus reveals Himself not just as a miracle worker, but as the essential sustenance for our souls. In John 6:24-35, we encounter a crowd that has witnessed the miraculous but still struggles to see beyond the material. Here, Jesus invites us all to a deeper understanding and a more profound hunger — not for what perishes, but for that which endures eternally. Let’s journey together to discover how Jesus, the Bread of Life, satisfies our deepest needs.

Setting the Scene Socially and Historically

In the time of Jesus, bread was a daily staple, essential for survival, much like it is in many parts of the world today. The feeding of the 5,000, where Jesus miraculously multiplied loaves and fishes, sets the stage for a deeper teaching moment in Capernaum. Historically, this event illustrates Jesus’ ability to meet both physical and spiritual needs. Socially, it challenges us today just as it did the original audience: to discern our true motivations and desires. Are we following Jesus for what we can get materially, or are we genuinely seeking the life He offers that eternally satisfies?

Sermon: “Don’t Settle for Crumbs: Feast on the Bread of Life!”

Sermon Outline

The Search for Jesus

  • John 6:24-25: The crowd follows Jesus, not out of faith, but because their physical needs were met.
    • Point: Often, our journey toward faith begins with seeking God for what He can provide rather than for who He is.

Jesus Challenges the Motive

  • John 6:26-27: Jesus confronts the crowd’s motive, urging them to seek the food that endures forever, which He offers.
    • Point: Our spiritual pursuit should not be driven by earthly benefits but by the eternal life only Jesus can give.

The Work of God

  • John 6:28-29: The crowd asks what they must do to perform God’s works, and Jesus simplifies it profoundly — believe in Him.
    • Point: True spiritual work is not about earning through deeds but believing in the One God has sent.

Questioning Jesus’ Authority

  • John 6:30-31: Despite the recent miracle, they demand a sign as proof of His claims, reminiscent of their ancestors in the wilderness.
    • Point: Doubt and demand for signs often hinder our faith; trust in His word leads us to the truth.

Jesus, the True Bread from Heaven

  • John 6:32-35: Jesus declares Himself the true bread from heaven, contrasting the manna given to their ancestors.
    • Point: Unlike manna that was temporary, Jesus offers Himself as the sustaining life force forever.

Application and Challenge

  • Personal Reflection: Are we chasing after Jesus for the temporary fixes or for the eternal life He promises?
  • Community Action: How can we as a community better represent the sustaining life Jesus offers to those around us?

This sermon invites us to reassess our spiritual hunger. Are we content with the temporary or are we daring to seek the eternal? Let’s not settle for crumbs when we are offered a feast.
