Welcome: Welcoming the Congregation
Good morning, dear friends. It’s always a joy to gather together as one family in Christ. Whether you’ve been with us for years or this is your first time, know that you are welcome here. Today, we’ll be exploring a passage from the Gospel of John that challenges us to look deeper into our relationship with Jesus. Let’s open our hearts to what God wants to teach us this morning.
Opening Prayer: A Prayer for Guidance
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your wisdom and guidance. As we open Your Word today, help us to understand what You are saying to us. Let Your truth sink deep into our souls, and may it change the way we live. Thank You for being the Bread of Life that sustains us. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
Introduction to Scripture: Setting the Stage
The passage we’re looking at today is from John 6:56-69. This Scripture is all about choices—whether we choose to follow Jesus or walk away. It’s a moment where the disciples, and even many in the crowd, had to decide if they were truly committed to Jesus or if they were just there for the free food. It challenges us to think about why we follow Jesus and what it really means to stay with Him, even when it’s hard.
The Events in John 6:56-69: The Moment of Decision
In John 6:56-69, Jesus has just finished teaching that He is the Bread of Life. He tells the crowd that whoever eats His flesh and drinks His blood will remain in Him, and He in them. This teaching was tough for many to accept, and as a result, many people turned away from following Him. They couldn’t understand that Jesus was speaking about spiritual nourishment, not physical food. Even the disciples were shaken. Jesus asked them, “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Peter, speaking for the group, responded with faith: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
Scripture Reading: John 6:56-69 (NIV)
56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.
57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.
58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.
59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?
62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before!
63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.
64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.
65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”

John 6:56-69 – Ready to Quit? Maybe It’s Time!
Sermon Introduction
Have you ever felt like walking away from something difficult? Maybe it’s a relationship, a job, or even your faith. In John 6:56-69, we see that even Jesus’ closest followers had moments of doubt and confusion. After Jesus spoke about being the bread of life and called His disciples to deeper commitment, many couldn’t handle it—they turned back and no longer followed Him. This passage challenges us to stay with Jesus, even when His teachings are tough to understand or live out. Today, we’ll look at why sticking with Him is always worth it, even when it’s hard.
Historical Context and Impact Today
In this passage, Jesus is speaking in a synagogue in Capernaum. His message about eating His flesh and drinking His blood was shocking to His Jewish audience. In their culture, consuming blood was strictly forbidden, so Jesus’ words sounded outrageous. Historically, this teaching led many to turn away from Jesus, but it also became a defining moment for the early church. They had to decide: would they follow Jesus only when it was easy, or would they trust Him, even when His teachings were difficult? Today, this passage reminds us that true discipleship isn’t about comfort—it’s about commitment. In our world, where people often chase after easy answers, Jesus calls us to something deeper and more meaningful.
