Welcoming the Congregation
Good morning, friends! I’m so glad you’re here today. Each of us comes with our own joys and burdens, but we’re all united by God’s love and by His plan for our lives. Today, we’re going to explore a passage that reminds us just how precious that love is, and how complete God’s gift of salvation is through Jesus. You’re not here by accident—God has a purpose for this moment, and I believe He’s got something special to say to each of us.
Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for gathering us together today. We come with open hearts, ready to hear Your voice and receive Your guidance. You are our strength, our hope, and our peace. As we open Your Word, teach us and lead us. May Your Holy Spirit work within us, softening our hearts to receive what You want to say. Thank You for loving us enough to send Jesus to stand in our place. We pray all this in His mighty name, Amen.
Introduction to Scripture
Today, we’re going to look at a passage from the book of Hebrews, chapter 9, verses 24 through 28. This passage is all about what Jesus did for us on the cross. In the Old Testament, priests would make sacrifices for people’s sins again and again. But when Jesus came, He offered Himself as a perfect, once-and-for-all sacrifice. We don’t need to keep bringing offerings to cover our sins because Jesus has already done it. He took our place, not just once, but for eternity. Let’s open our hearts to what this scripture means for us today.
The Events in the NIV Bible Verse
In Hebrews 9:24-28, we see Jesus, our High Priest, who didn’t enter a man-made sanctuary. Instead, He went into heaven itself, standing before God on our behalf. He didn’t keep offering Himself again and again; He sacrificed Himself once to take away our sins forever. This is the beauty of the gospel: that Jesus came, lived a perfect life, and willingly gave Himself up so we could be free. He’s promised to return, not to deal with sin again but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him. We’re reminded here of God’s incredible plan—our forgiveness, our freedom, all given through Jesus.
Hebrews 9:24-28 (NIV)
24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence.
25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.
26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.
27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,
28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
Intercessory Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for being our perfect sacrifice, for taking away our sins once and for all. We ask You to help us live in the freedom and peace that You’ve given. When we feel unworthy, remind us that we are washed clean in Your love. When we feel lost, show us that You are always near. Prepare our hearts for Your return, and help us to live each day for You. In Your name, we pray, Amen.
Congregational Prayer Response
Congregation: Lord, we thank You for the gift of Jesus, our Savior. Help us to remember that we are forgiven, and that we stand in Your grace. Give us courage to wait for Your return with hope and faith. Amen.
