Matthew 1:18-25 (NIV) – God at Work When Life Doesn’t Make Sense
“What Do You Do When God’s Plan Interrupts Yours?”
Joseph Didn’t Get an Explanation – He Got a Calling. And That Changes Everything.
When you step into the pulpit, you don’t stand there alone. You carry the whispered prayers of your people.
The quiet hopes they don’t always say out loud.
The longing for reassurance that God is still at work – even when life feels confusing.
Joseph knew that feeling.
Matthew tells us Joseph was faithful, obedient, and planning a good life. Then suddenly, everything changed. Mary was pregnant. His future unraveled overnight. No warning. No roadmap. Just a decision to make.
And isn’t that where so many people in your congregation live?
They love God. They’re trying to do the right thing. But something unexpected has shaken their confidence. A diagnosis. A loss. A family struggle. A season that doesn’t make sense.
This message invites them to see what Joseph discovered:
God often does His greatest work in the middle of our biggest interruptions.
As this story unfolds, hearts begin to soften. Faith grows quieter – but deeper. And people realize that obedience doesn’t require understanding… just trust.

Matthew 1:24-25 – Obedience That Changes Everything
Joseph obeys without hesitation. No applause. No explanation. Just trust. His quiet faith becomes part of God’s redemptive plan. This section challenges believers to follow God faithfully – even when they don’t have all the answers.

A Gentle Invitation to Trust God When Life Doesn’t Make Sense
There are moments in life when God’s plan feels confusing. We love Him. We’re trying to do the right thing. And still, the story takes a turn we didn’t expect.
That’s where Matthew 1:18-25 meets us.
Joseph didn’t understand what God was doing. Mary didn’t get a full explanation. And yet, right in the middle of confusion, God was quietly working out salvation for the world.
This passage reminds us of a simple but life-changing truth: God doesn’t always explain everything-but He is always present.
And when we trust Him, even without full understanding, our obedience becomes part of something much bigger than ourselves.
That’s the heart of discipleship-not having all the answers, but choosing to follow Jesus anyway.

Section 5. Scripture Reading
Matthew 1:18-25 (NIV)
Introduction to the Passage
Today’s Scripture tells the story of Joseph-an ordinary man facing extraordinary circumstances. It’s a story of confusion, courage, obedience, and deep trust in God.
The Events of the Passage
Joseph’s plans are interrupted. His future feels uncertain. Yet God speaks, reassures, and calls him to trust. Through Joseph’s quiet obedience, God brings His promise to life-Jesus, our Savior, Immanuel.
Scripture Reading
18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.
19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
Section 6. Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer
Intercessory Prayer
Gracious Father, we lift before You those who are walking through uncertainty right now. Like Joseph, many are trying to do the right thing while carrying heavy questions. Remind them today that You are near, that You are faithful, and that You are always at work-even when the path isn’t clear. Give us hearts that trust You and courage to obey You one step at a time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Section 7. Offering
A Word About Giving
Church, giving is more than a moment in our service-it’s an act of worship. When we give our tithes and offerings, we’re saying, “God, I trust You.” Just as Joseph trusted God with his future, we trust Him with what He has already placed in our hands.
Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Offering
Lord, thank You for providing for us so generously. As we give today, we do so with grateful hearts, honoring You and trusting You to use these gifts for Your glory and Your purposes. Bless every giver, and may our worship continue through lives of obedience and generosity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
