Friends, it is so easy to fall into the trap of wanting to be the director of our own lives. In these first few verses, we see the religious leaders stepping up to Jesus, essentially asking, “Who gave you the right to do things this way?” They were uncomfortable because Jesus did not fit into their neat, organized boxes of how faith was supposed to look. Instead of opening their hearts to what God was doing right in front of them, they clung tightly to their own rules and their own sense of control.
How often do we do the exact same thing? We face a situation we do not understand, or God asks us to take a step of faith that feels uncomfortable, and our first response is to question His plan. But true spiritual growth begins the moment we are willing to hand over the steering wheel. When we stop demanding explanations and start trusting His heart, we open ourselves up to the incredible joy of a genuine relationship with Him.

The Difference Between Saying “Yes” and Living “Yes”
Jesus then shares a story that I think every single one of us can relate to. He talks about a father who asks his two sons to go work in the vineyard. One son immediately says, “No,” but later feels a change of heart and goes to do the work. The other son gives the perfect, polite answer—”I will, sir”—but he never actually shows up. It is a gentle reminder that God is not looking for lip service; He is looking for life change.
We can all have moments where we have the best of intentions. We say we are going to spend more time in prayer, be more generous, or show more patience with our families. We say “yes” with our words, but our schedules and habits say something completely different. Jesus is inviting us to move beyond good intentions and step into obedience. Jesus points out that the first son, the one who initially said “no” and walked away, was actually the one who did the father’s will because he eventually changed his mind. Jesus tells the religious leaders that people with messy pasts—tax collectors and prostitutes—were entering the kingdom of God ahead of them because they heard the truth, believed it, and allowed it to transform their lives.
What an amazing truth for us today! It does not matter what your past looks like, how many times you have said “no” to God, or how far away you might feel right now. God’s grace is big enough to cover it all. He is simply waiting for you to turn toward Him. Following Jesus is a journey of a thousand small turnarounds. Whenever we realize we are walking in the wrong direction, we simply stop, change our minds, and run back into the loving arms of our Father.
Practical Application: Surrendering Our Need for Control
Trusting God’s Heart When We Don’t Understand His Plan
Friends, the most practical way we can respond to the first part of this passage is by taking a hard look at where we are holding onto the steering wheel of our lives. We all have that one area—maybe it is our finances, our children’s future, or our careers—where we constantly question how God is working. This week, I want to invite you to intentionally practice surrender. When you feel that anxiety rising up, or the urge to demand answers from God, pause and take a deep breath.
A great way to do this is to physically open your hands while you pray, symbolizing that you are releasing your grip. Tell God, “I don’t understand what You are doing here, but I trust Your heart.” It is a simple, daily practice of reminding ourselves that He is the loving author of our lives, and we can rest securely in His capable hands.
Practical Steps for Surrender:
- Identify your control areas: Write down the things you worry about most.
- Practice open-handed prayer: Physically open your hands as a sign of release.
- Choose trust over answers: Remind yourself of God’s past faithfulness when you face uncertainty.
Moving From Intention to Action
Taking the Next Right Step in Your Faith Journey
It is so incredibly easy to sit in a Bible study, feel inspired, and say all the right things, only to go home and change absolutely nothing about our daily routines. Jesus is inviting us into the joy of actual discipleship, which means our actions need to match our intentions. If we want to be like the son who actually went out into the vineyard, we have to move from just saying “yes” to living it out in real time.
This week, pick just one area where you have been putting off obedience. Maybe you have been meaning to encourage a struggling friend, or perhaps you have felt a gentle nudge to start serving in your community. Do not wait for the perfect moment or a grand feeling of inspiration. Just take the next right step. Authentic spiritual growth happens not in our big, dramatic declarations, but in our quiet, everyday choices to love God and love people.
Practical Steps for Action:
- Pick one small act of obedience: Don’t overwhelm yourself; choose one thing to focus on this week.
- Schedule your “yes”: Put it on your calendar so it becomes a commitment, not just a thought.
- Celebrate small wins: Thank God for the grace to take that step, no matter how small it feels.
Embracing the Grace of a Fresh Start

Perhaps the most encouraging truth we can apply to our lives today is that our past mistakes, our stubborn moments, and our initial “no” to God do not disqualify us from His grace. If you are feeling weighed down by guilt, or if you feel like you have wandered too far off the path, I want you to hear this loud and clear: God’s arms are wide open, waiting for you to turn around.
The practical application here is the beautiful gift of repentance. Repentance isn’t a scary word; it simply means changing your mind and changing your direction. Take a few quiet moments today to bring your missteps to God. Be completely honest with Him. Let go of the guilt, receive His total forgiveness, and step forward into the fresh start He has prepared for you. There is so much joy waiting for you on the other side of that turnaround!
