Growing Together in God’s Grace
This study explores the heart of Jesus’ teaching on humility, showing us how true greatness is found not in seeking honor from others, but in serving them with a loving, Christ-centered heart.
Fellowship Bible Study & Sermon Outline: Matthew 23:1-12
The Theme of the Scripture
The central theme of this passage is the call to genuine, humble service over the trap of performative pride. Jesus invites us to examine our hearts and motives, teaching that the path to greatness in God’s Kingdom is not found in being served or recognized, but in living a life that humbly lifts others up.
The Heart of True Greatness: A Simple Way to Lead Like Jesus
Introduction to the Scripture
Have you ever felt the pressure to perform or be noticed? In this powerful encounter, Jesus speaks directly to our hearts about the danger of living for the applause of people and invites us into something much deeper and more joyful: a life of authentic, humble service modeled after His own heart.
The Events in the Scripture
In these verses, Jesus confronts the religious leaders for their hypocrisy – preaching one thing while living another – and their obsession with titles and public honor. He turns their perspective upside down, warning His followers not to imitate that behavior, but instead to become the greatest among them by serving others with a pure, humble heart.

NIV Scripture: Matthew 23:1-12
1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
5 “Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the सबसे important seats in the synagogues; 7 they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.
8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah.
11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
The Path to Humility – The Trap of Hypocrisy Matthew 23:1-4
It is so easy to fall into the habit of expecting more from others than we are willing to give ourselves. Jesus calls us to a higher standard, where our lives align with the truth we share with those around us.
The Heart of True Leadership Matthew 23:5-12
True joy in leadership is never about the titles we hold, but about the hearts we serve. When we choose to humble ourselves, we find that God lifts us up in ways that the world could never offer.

Fellowship Bible Study & Sermon Outline: Matthew 23:1-12
1. Let Your Life Match Your Words – Matthew 23:1-4
Jesus warns the crowd and His disciples not to copy leaders who teach God’s truth but fail to live it. Faith becomes meaningful when our actions reflect the love and integrity we encourage in others.
He also notices when people make life heavier for others without offering help. Jesus invites us to lead with compassion, sharing burdens and serving with a willing heart.
2. Seek God’s Approval, Not Applause – Matthew 23:5-7
Jesus describes leaders who make a show of their faith and long for recognition, honor, and important titles. Their example reminds us to ask what is shaping our choices: love for God, or the desire to impress people?
Our worth does not depend on being noticed. We can rest in God’s care and serve faithfully, even when no one else sees.
3. Remember Who Is Truly Great – Matthew 23:8-10
Jesus teaches His followers to see one another as family under God, with the Messiah as their Teacher. This keeps pride from dividing us and helps us approach one another with humility and respect.
We all have more to learn from God. Rather than seeking status, we can grow together as disciples who listen to Jesus and encourage one another.
4. Choose the Way of a Servant – Matthew 23:11-12
Jesus turns the world’s idea of greatness upside down: the greatest is the one who serves. In God’s Kingdom, leadership is not about being above others; it is about caring for them.
Jesus also warns that self-exaltation leads to being brought low, while humility opens us to God’s work in our lives. We can follow Him by choosing humble service in the everyday moments before us.
Practical Applications: Matthew 23:1-12 Let Your Life Match Your Words
Practice what you encourage in others
Choose one value you often share – such as patience, honesty, or kindness – and look for a small way to live it out today. When our actions reflect our words, we offer others a faith they can see and trust.
Example: If you encourage your family to listen patiently, put your phone aside and give someone your full attention during a conversation.
Seek God’s Approval, Not Applause – Serve faithfully, even when no one notices
Before taking on a task or sharing an accomplishment, pause and ask yourself what is motivating you. Let gratitude to God – not the hope of praise – guide the way you serve.
Example: Quietly help a neighbor with an errand without telling others or waiting for recognition.
Remember Who Is Truly Great – Learn and grow alongside one another
Approach conversations with humility, remembering that every person has dignity and that we all need God’s wisdom. Make room to listen, learn, and encourage others rather than trying to prove you are right.
Example: At Bible study, invite someone else to share their thoughts first, and listen with genuine interest.
Choose the Way of a Servant – Look for one person you can help
Make service a simple part of your day. Notice someone’s need and offer practical help with kindness, without expecting anything in return.
Example: Stay a few minutes after a gathering to help clean up, or check in on someone who may be feeling alone.
