Welcome

Good morning, church family! Today, we’re going to look at a moment in the life of Jesus that touches on a challenging topic. He talks to His disciples about things that will pass away, things that will stay, and how to find a lasting hope in uncertain times. I’m so glad you’re here to dive into God’s Word together.

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for bringing us together today. We know that everything in this world will one day pass, but You and Your Word are unchanging. We ask You to open our hearts and minds to understand what You have for us in this passage. Help us find comfort in Your presence and build our faith in what is eternal. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Introduction to Scripture

In Mark 13, Jesus gives His disciples a glimpse into the future. They admire the temple’s beauty, but Jesus reminds them of a reality they hadn’t considered. This temple, this proud symbol of their faith, would one day crumble. Jesus then goes on to teach them how to stay rooted in faith, even as they face trials and uncertainties.

Events in Mark 13:1-8

In this passage, Jesus and His disciples are leaving the temple when one of them remarks on its impressive stones and architecture. Jesus tells them that one day, all of it will be torn down. This was shocking! The temple was central to their worship, a symbol of God’s presence. Jesus warns of future trials and events that would test their faith. But even in this, He calls them to focus on God’s eternal promises instead of the temporary things of this world.

Scripture: Mark 13:1-8 (NIV)

1 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”
2 “Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately,
4 “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”
5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you.
6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many.
7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.
8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.”

Intercessory Prayer

Lord, we come before You in a world that is full of change and uncertainty. We ask for peace and wisdom to focus on what is eternal rather than what fades away. Help us to trust You, no matter what challenges we face. May we be grounded in Your truth and not be shaken by the troubles around us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Congregational Prayer Response

Father, we place our hope in You, knowing that even as things around us crumble, You remain steady and true. We commit our lives to stand firm in Your love and truth. Amen.
