Move over, passive-aggressive Post-it notes! Paul’s mastered the art of the holy guilt trip. It’s like saying, “I could tell you to take out the trash, but I’d rather you do it out of love for me and our rapidly decomposing kitchen.”

Scripture Reading
Introduction to Philemon 1:1-21
Today, we’re diving into a short but powerful letter from the apostle Paul to his friend Philemon. This letter is all about reconciliation, forgiveness, and the transformative power of the gospel in our relationships.
The Events in Philemon 1:1-21
Paul writes this letter from prison to Philemon, a wealthy Christian in Colossae. The story revolves around Onesimus, Philemon’s runaway slave who has become a Christian under Paul’s ministry. Paul is sending Onesimus back to Philemon, but with a twist – he’s asking Philemon to receive Onesimus not as a slave, but as a beloved brother in Christ. It’s a powerful example of how the gospel should reshape our view of others and transform our relationships.
Philemon 1-21 NIV (New International Version)
Thanksgiving and Prayer
4 I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, 5 because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus. 6 I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. 7 Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.
Paul’s Plea for Onesimus
8 Therefore, although in Christ I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to do, 9 yet I prefer to appeal to you on the basis of love. It is as none other than Paul—an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus— 10 that I appeal to you for my son Onesimus,[b] who became my son while I was in chains. 11 Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.
12 I am sending him—who is my very heart—back to you. 13 I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel. 14 But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do would not seem forced but would be voluntary. 15 Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back forever— 16 no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a fellow man and as a brother in the Lord.
17 So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. 18 If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me. 19 I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand. I will pay it back—not to mention that you owe me your very self. 20 I do wish, brother, that I may have some benefit from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ. 21 Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.
Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer
Loving Father, as we reflect on Paul’s letter to Philemon, we’re reminded of the power of your love to transform relationships. We pray for the courage to extend forgiveness and seek reconciliation, even when it’s difficult. Help us to see others as you see them – as valuable and loved.
Congregational Prayer Response
All: Lord, make us instruments of your peace and love, seeing the worth in every person as a child of God. Amen.
Offering
You know, friends, when we give our tithes and offerings, it’s not just about supporting the church – it’s an act of worship. It’s us saying, “God, everything I have comes from you, and I trust you with my resources.”
Just as Paul encouraged Philemon to be generous in his response to Onesimus, we have the opportunity to be generous in our giving to God’s work. Let’s pray together as we prepare our hearts for this act of worship.
Lord, we thank you for your endless generosity towards us. As we give our tithes and offerings, we do so with grateful hearts, knowing that everything we have comes from you. Use these gifts to further your kingdom and bless others, just as you’ve blessed us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Special Music
As we continue in our worship, we have a special treat for you. Our own [insert name or group] will be sharing a beautiful song that echoes the themes of reconciliation and love we’ve been exploring in Philemon. Let’s open our hearts as they minister to us through music.
