Introduction to Scripture

Today, we’ll dive into a story Jesus told, found in the book of Matthew. How preparred are you?

Today Scripture and Sermon is about ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. This parable teaches us about being prepared, about living in a state of readiness for Christ’s return. It challenges us to consider what it means to be ready and to live our lives with intention and purpose, keeping our spiritual lamps filled and our hearts focused on the Lord.

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 25:1-13 The Parable of the Ten Virgins

(1) “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
(2) Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
(3) The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.
(4) The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.
(5) The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
(6) “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
(7) “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
(8) The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
(9) “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
(10) “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
(11) “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’
(12) “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’
(13) “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

Introduction to Matthew 25:1-13

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

Matthew 25:1-13 introduces us to the Parable of the Ten Virgins, which underscores the importance of being prepared for the coming of the Lord. In this passage, ten virgins await the bridegroom’s arrival, five wise and five foolish. The wise ones take oil in jars along with their lamps, while the foolish ones do not.

Explanation: This section of the scripture emphasizes the need for readiness and the wisdom in preparation. The oil is often interpreted as a symbol of the Holy Spirit or faith that one should keep replenished.

Reflection: It prompts us to consider how prepared we are for Christ’s return. Are we like the wise virgins, ensuring that our spiritual reserves are full, or are we neglecting our spiritual growth?

Christian Discipleship and Spiritual Growth Commentary: This passage calls disciples to live in a state of perpetual readiness, fostering a relationship with God that is vibrant and active. Spiritual growth here is likened to the oil – something that must be continually replenished through prayer, studying the Word, and living out the teachings of Jesus.

The Arrival of the Bridegroom

The Midnight Cry and the Separation

At midnight the cry rang out that the bridegroom was arriving. The virgins all woke up to prepare their lamps. The foolish virgins, realizing they had no oil, asked the wise ones for some, but there wasn’t enough to share. They went to buy oil, and during their absence, the bridegroom came. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut.

Explanation: The arrival of the bridegroom represents the Second Coming of Christ. The separation of the virgins upon his arrival signifies the final division between those who are prepared and those who are not.

Reflection: This reminds us of the suddenness and finality of Christ’s return. It challenges us to consider whether we are living in a way that keeps us ready to meet Him at any moment.

Christian Discipleship and Spiritual Growth Commentary: Discipleship involves vigilant living, where believers must always be spiritually alert and responsive to God’s calling. Spiritual growth is not a sporadic event but a consistent journey that prepares one for the ultimate encounter with Christ.

The Closed Door

The Exclusion of the Unprepared

When the foolish virgins returned, they found the door shut and they were not allowed in. They pleaded, “Lord, Lord,” but he replied, “Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.”

Explanation: The closed door is a symbol of the finality of Christ’s judgment. The response of the bridegroom to the unprepared virgins serves as a stern warning of the consequences of being unready.

Reflection: It causes us to think about the seriousness with which we take our spiritual readiness. Are we assuming that we can always make up for lost time?

Christian Discipleship and Spiritual Growth Commentary: True discipleship entails not only recognizing Christ’s lordship but also committing to a life that is in harmony with His will. Spiritual growth is necessary to cultivate a genuine connection with Christ, so that He may recognize us as His own.

Conclusion and the Call to Watchfulness

“Therefore keep watch…”

The parable concludes with the admonition to “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” This is a call to constant vigilance in our spiritual lives.

Explanation: This final verse serves as a universal caution to all believers to live a life of readiness, for the time of Christ’s return is unknown.

Reflection: It invites us to examine the level of watchfulness we maintain in our daily lives. Are we complacent, or are we living each day as if it could be the day of His return?

Christian Discipleship and Spiritual Growth Commentary: Vigilance is a key aspect of discipleship. It involves being aware of the spiritual condition of our hearts and minds and constantly seeking to grow in faith and obedience.

Closing Commentary on the Scripture

The Parable of the Ten Virgins in Matthew 25:1-13 serves as a powerful and sobering reminder of the need for constant vigilance in our Christian walk. It isn’t simply a cautionary tale about the end times, but a directive for how to live our lives every day. For the Christian disciple, it is a clear message that spiritual slumber is a risk we cannot afford to take. Spiritual growth is not an optional accessory to our faith—it is the oil that keeps our lamps burning brightly, a necessity that requires our daily attention.

As we ponder this parable, we recognize that the essence of wisdom in the Christian journey is not in knowing the times or seasons, but in being prepared for them, whenever they may come. This readiness is not just about avoiding negative consequences, but about embracing the joyous communion with Christ at the ultimate wedding feast.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, grant us the wisdom of the wise virgins to keep our lamps filled with the oil of Your presence. Help us to be alert and ready, not out of fear, but out of a desire to enter into the joy of Your kingdom. Strengthen us with Your Spirit to live lives of anticipation and readiness. And Lord, give us the courage to invite others into the light of Your love, that they too may be prepared for Your glorious return. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
