Trust Issues: When Leaning on Humans Goes Hilariously Wrong. Turns out, putting all your trust in humans instead of God is about as reliable as a GPS that says, “I was lost 10 Miles Ago!”

Section 5: Scripture Reading
Introduction to Jeremiah 17:5-10
Today’s Scripture reminds us of the difference between trusting in human strength versus trusting in God. It paints a vivid picture: those who rely on themselves end up spiritually dry, while those who put their faith in God flourish like a tree by the river.
The Message in the Passage
The prophet Jeremiah speaks directly to the people of Judah, warning them about misplaced trust. Some relied on alliances with foreign nations, others on their own strength—but none of it could save them. Only faith in God brings true security.
Jeremiah 17:5-10 (NIV)
5 This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord.
6 That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.
7 “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.
8 They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”
9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
10 “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”
Section 6: Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer
Intercessory Prayer
Lord, we acknowledge that we sometimes place our trust in the wrong things—our own strength, our finances, our plans. But today, we choose to trust in You. You are our refuge, our source of life. Strengthen our hearts, guide our steps, and help us remain rooted in Your Word.
Congregational Prayer Response
Leader: Lord, we put our trust in You.
Congregation: We will be like trees planted by the water, unshaken by the storms of life.
Section 7: Offering
Giving as Worship
Tithing isn’t just a financial transaction—it’s an act of worship, a declaration that we trust God as our provider. As we give, we are reminded that everything we have comes from Him.
Prayer for the Offering
Heavenly Father, we give to You with grateful hearts, knowing that You are our provider. Use these tithes and offerings to further Your kingdom and bless those in need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Section 8: Special Music or Presentation
A Time of Reflection

The Hidden Trap That’s Silently Sabotaging Your Faith (And How to Escape It)
Most people don’t realize it, but there’s a dangerous mistake lurking in their spiritual life. It’s subtle. It’s deceptive. And worst of all? It’s keeping them stuck in cycles of doubt, fear, and spiritual dryness.
Jeremiah 17:5-10 exposes this trap in a way that’s almost uncomfortably direct: Trusting in human strength instead of God’s. It sounds simple, right? But here’s the kicker—most believers don’t even realize they’re doing it.
- They trust their plans more than God’s promises.
- They rely on circumstances instead of faith.
- They chase worldly security instead of divine provision.
And like a withering bush in the desert, their spiritual life feels dry, empty, and exhausting.
But here’s the good news…
There’s a way out. And once you see it, you’ll never approach your faith the same way again.
I once met a man—let’s call him David—who had everything on paper. He was respected, successful, and by all accounts, doing well. But spiritually? He felt completely lost.
He told me, “I pray, I read my Bible, I go to church… but I still feel like I’m running on empty.”
Sound familiar?
David was doing all the right things. But here’s what he didn’t see: He was still leaning on himself.
- When things got tough, he relied on his own wisdom.
- When life felt uncertain, he looked to people instead of God.
- When fear crept in, he trusted his feelings instead of trusting the Lord.
And guess what? His heart was exhausted.
Then one day, we studied Jeremiah 17:7-8 together:
“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”
David had an “aha” moment.
He realized he had been acting like a desert shrub—barely surviving—when God had called him to be a thriving tree. The difference? Where he placed his trust.
That one shift changed everything.
- His prayers became deeper, not desperate.
- His faith felt steady, not frantic.
- His peace became unshakable, no matter what life threw his way.
Now, imagine what would happen if you and your congregation could experience this kind of transformation, too.
Here’s the deal: This isn’t just another sermon.
It’s a powerful, heart-stirring message designed to:
✅ Open eyes to the hidden ways we trust ourselves instead of God.
✅ Reveal the difference between spiritual survival and spiritual thriving.
✅ Show believers how to root their faith in God’s promises—not fleeting emotions or circumstances.
Every word of this sermon was crafted with love and a deep desire to ignite faith and transformation in those who hear it.
Picture yourself delivering this message to your congregation.
- Imagine their hearts stirring as they realize where they’ve been placing their trust.
- See the renewed hope, deeper faith, and lasting spiritual growth that takes root.
- Feel the excitement as they leave church more confident in God than ever before.
