Amen.

Section 5. Scripture Reading
Today, we’ll be diving into a powerful passage from the Book of Isaiah. Isaiah was a prophet who spoke God’s message to the people of Israel, calling them back to faithfulness and warning them of the consequences of their sin.
In this passage, the people were going through the motions of religious observance, but their hearts were far from God. Their offerings and sacrifices were meaningless because they were not accompanied by genuine repentance and a changed life. Isaiah speaks out against their hypocrisy and calls them to true justice and righteousness.
Here’s Isaiah 1:10-18:
10 Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah!
11 “The multitude of your sacrifices—what are they to me?” says the Lord. “I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
12 When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts?
13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations—I cannot bear your worthless assemblies.
14 Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals I hate with all my being. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.
15 When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening. Your hands are full of blood!
16 Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong.
17 Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.
18 “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.
Section 6. Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer
Let’s bow our heads and lift our hearts in prayer, remembering the message we just heard from Isaiah.
Lord, we confess that sometimes we, too, can fall into the trap of empty religious practices. We can go through the motions without truly engaging our hearts with you. Forgive us for those times when our actions don’t match our words. Help us to examine our lives and turn away from anything that displeases you. Give us the courage to seek justice, defend the oppressed, and care for those in need. Help us to live lives that are pleasing in your sight, lives that reflect your love and compassion. We ask for your guidance and wisdom as we seek to follow you more closely. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Congregational Prayer Response: Lord, help us to turn away from evil and learn to do good.
Section 7. Offering
Now, as we prepare to give our tithes and offerings, let’s remember that this is an act of worship. It’s a way for us to express our gratitude to God for all He has given us and to support the work of His church in our community and around the world.
Father, we thank you for the blessings you have poured out upon us. We offer these gifts as an expression of our love and gratitude. Use them to further your kingdom, to reach those in need, and to share the good news of Jesus Christ. We dedicate these tithes and offerings to you, and we pray that they will be used to bring glory to your name. Amen.
Section 8. Special Music
Now, we are blessed to have our choir share a special piece with us today. Let’s welcome them as they lift their voices in song!

Section 11. The Sermon
I. The Problem: Empty Religion (Isaiah 1:10-15)
- Verses 10-11: Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom…
In this opening section, God is basically saying, “I’m not impressed with your religious performances.” The people were offering sacrifices and attending religious feasts, but their hearts were far from God. It’s like when we get so caught up in the doing of church that we forget the being of church. We can become experts at going through the motions without truly connecting with God.
My Thoughts:
I’ve been there. I’ve found myself so focused on the logistics of ministry, the planning, the programs, that I’ve neglected my own personal relationship with God. It’s a dangerous place to be.
Personal Commentary:
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that our religious activities make us right with God. We think, “If I attend church every Sunday, give regularly, and volunteer my time, then I’m good.” But God is looking for more than just outward obedience. He wants our hearts.
Personal Commentary on Christian Discipleship:
Discipleship isn’t just about attending church or reading the Bible. It’s about allowing God to transform every area of our lives. It’s about becoming more like Jesus in our thoughts, words, and actions.
Personal Reflection Commentary on Spiritual Growth:
Spiritual growth requires honesty. We have to be willing to admit that we’re not perfect, that we still have areas where we need to grow. It requires humility, recognizing that we can’t do it on our own, we need God’s help.
Ask Yourself This Question:
Am I going through the motions of religion, or am I genuinely seeking God with all my heart?
II. The Call to Action: Repentance and Righteousness (Isaiah 1:16-17)
- Verses 16-17: Wash and make yourselves clean…
God doesn’t just point out the problem; He offers a solution. He calls the people to repent, to turn away from their evil deeds, and to learn to do good. He commands them to seek justice, defend the oppressed, and care for the vulnerable. This is where the rubber meets the road. It’s not enough to just acknowledge our sin; we have to actively turn away from it and start living a life that pleases God.
My Thoughts:
This is challenging! It’s much easier to stay in our comfort zones and keep doing things the way we’ve always done them. But God is calling us to something more.
Personal Commentary:
Seeking justice and defending the oppressed can be uncomfortable. It means standing up for those who can’t stand up for themselves. It means challenging systems and structures that perpetuate injustice. But this is what it means to follow Jesus.
Personal Commentary on Christian Discipleship:
A true disciple is one who is committed to living a life of righteousness, a life that is pleasing to God. This involves making tough choices and sacrificing our own desires for the sake of others.
Personal Reflection Commentary on Spiritual Growth:
Spiritual growth is a process of continuous learning and transformation. We’ll never arrive, but we should always be striving to become more like Jesus.
Ask Yourself This Question:
What specific steps can I take this week to turn away from evil and learn to do good?
III. The Promise of Forgiveness: Cleansed and Renewed (Isaiah 1:18)
- Verse 18: “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord…
Here’s the amazing thing about God: even when we’ve messed up, even when our sins are like scarlet, He offers forgiveness and cleansing. He promises to make us as white as snow and as pure as wool. This is the heart of the Gospel! It’s not about earning God’s favor; it’s about receiving His grace.
My Thoughts:
This verse always gives me hope. No matter how far we’ve strayed, God is always willing to welcome us back with open arms.
Personal Commentary:
Forgiveness is a gift. We can’t earn it, and we don’t deserve it. But God offers it freely to all who come to Him with a repentant heart.
Personal Commentary on Christian Discipleship:
Discipleship is a journey of grace. We’ll make mistakes, we’ll stumble, but God will never give up on us. He’ll continue to mold us and shape us into the people He wants us to be.
Personal Reflection Commentary on Spiritual Growth:
Spiritual growth is a partnership between us and God. We do our part by seeking Him, obeying Him, and surrendering to Him. And He does His part by transforming us from the inside out.
Ask Yourself This Question:
Am I holding onto guilt and shame, or am I embracing God’s forgiveness and allowing Him to cleanse and renew me?
Section 12. Final Thoughts
As we reflect on Isaiah 1:10-18, let’s remember that God is not interested in empty religious practices. He wants our hearts. He wants us to live lives of repentance, righteousness, and compassion. He wants us to seek justice, defend the oppressed, and care for the vulnerable. And He promises that if we turn to Him with a repentant heart, He will forgive us, cleanse us, and renew us. So let’s move forward with a renewed commitment to Christian discipleship and spiritual growth, allowing God to transform us into the people He wants us to be.
Closing Prayer:
Lord, we thank you for your word that challenges us, convicts us, and inspires us. We confess that we often fall short of your expectations, but we are grateful for your grace and forgiveness. Help us to turn away from evil and learn to do good. Give us the courage to seek justice, defend the oppressed, and care for those in need. Fill us with your love and compassion, and empower us to live lives that are pleasing in your sight. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen!
Section 13. Closing Hymn or Worship Song
As we prepare to close, let’s stand together and unite our voices in a final song of worship. Let’s sing “Amazing Grace,” reminding ourselves of God’s incredible love and forgiveness that is available to us all.
Section 14. Benediction
May the Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)
