Section 5. Scripture Reading
Today, we’re going to be looking at a powerful passage from the Old Testament, a promise of hope and renewal from the book of Jeremiah.
The Event of Jeremiah 31:27-34
Jeremiah 31:27-34 is a pivotal passage where God promises to plant both people and animals in Israel and Judah, signifying restoration and growth after a period of devastation. God declares that the people will no longer suffer for their ancestors’ sins but will be accountable for their own actions. The most significant aspect of this passage is the promise of a new covenant, which will be different from the old one. This new covenant will involve God writing His law on the hearts of the people, making them truly know Him, and forgiving their sins, ensuring a deep, personal relationship with Him. This passage offers a message of hope, individual accountability, and a transformative, internalized relationship with God.
Jeremiah 31:27-34 (NIV)
27 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will plant the kingdoms of Israel and Judah with people and animals. 28 Just as I watched over them to uproot and tear down, to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster, so I will watch over them to plant and to build,” declares the Lord. 29 “In those days people will no longer say,
“‘The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’
30 Instead, everyone will die for their own sin; whoever eats sour grapes—their own teeth will be set on edge.
31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
Section 6. Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer
Intercessory Prayer
Lord, we lift up our hearts to you, mindful of your promise of a new covenant, one where your law is written on our hearts. We ask for your guidance and wisdom as we seek to live according to your teachings. Help us to forgive as you have forgiven us, and to extend your grace to those around us. We also pray for those who are struggling, those who feel lost or burdened by their sins. May they find solace and hope in your promise of forgiveness and renewal.
Congregational Prayer Response
Lord, let us all truly “know the Lord… from the least of them to the greatest,” as you have promised in Jeremiah.
Section 7. Offering
Giving is more than just a duty; it’s an act of worship, a way to show our gratitude for all that God has given us. As we give our tithes and offerings, let us do so with joyful hearts, knowing that we are participating in God’s work here on Earth.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the blessings you have poured into our lives. We offer these tithes and gifts as a symbol of our gratitude and dedication to your work. Use these gifts to further your kingdom, to spread your love, and to bring hope to those in need. We ask that you bless these offerings and multiply them to accomplish your will. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Hey friend, ever feel like you’re just going through the motions when it comes to your faith? Like you’re hearing the words but they’re not quite sinking in? I get it. I’ve been there. Remember when I got my first real dog tags? All they did was sit in my pocket. It wasn’t until I put them on my shirt that I really felt like I was a part of the Army. God wants more for you than a surface-level faith. He wants your love and commitment, the kind that changes you from the inside out.
