Bible Study God’s Faithful Call: Embracing Our Identity in Christ

Is Your Spiritual Caller ID Showing “Unknown”?

Friends, let me share a story that might sound familiar. A few years ago, I was sitting in my office when my phone rang. The caller ID said “Unknown.” Now, like many of you, I’m usually hesitant to answer those calls. But something told me to pick up.

On the other end was an old friend I hadn’t spoken to in years. He was going through a tough time and felt led to reach out. That conversation ended up being exactly what both of us needed that day.

You see, sometimes God calls us in ways we don’t expect. His “caller ID” might not always be clear, but His voice is unmistakable when we learn to listen.

In 1 Corinthians 1:1-9, Paul is essentially making a divine phone call to the church in Corinth. He’s reminding them – and us – that we’ve been called by God, enriched in every way, and strengthened to answer that call with confidence.

Today, I want to offer you something special. It’s not just a sermon; it’s an invitation to rediscover your spiritual caller ID. To remember who you are in Christ and the incredible calling He has placed on your life.

This message will help you:

  • Recognize God’s voice amidst the noise of everyday life
  • Embrace your identity as a saint called by God
  • Tap into the spiritual gifts He’s given you
  • Stand firm in your faith, knowing God is faithful

Plus, when you get this message today, you’ll also receive a companion Bible study guide to help you dive deeper into these truths throughout the week.

Sermon: Living Out Our Divine Purpose!

Introduction

Friends, have you ever felt like you were meant for something more? Like there’s a purpose waiting to be fulfilled in your life? Well, I’ve got good news for you today. In 1 Corinthians 1:1-9, the Apostle Paul reminds us of an incredible truth: each one of us has been called by God for a divine purpose.

I. The Divine Call (verses 1-3)

Let’s start with verses 1-3. Paul introduces himself as “called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God.” Now, you might be thinking, “That’s great for Paul, but what about me?” Here’s the amazing part – in verse 2, Paul addresses the letter to “those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people.”

Key Point: You are called by God. Yes, you!

This isn’t just about Paul or the Corinthians. It’s about you and me. God has set us apart, called us to be His holy people. That’s our true identity. Not defined by our jobs, our mistakes, or what others think of us, but by God’s calling on our lives.

II. Enriched in Christ (verses 4-6)

Moving on to verses 4-6, Paul says something remarkable. He thanks God because the Corinthians have been “enriched in every way – with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge.”

Key Point: God equips those He calls.

When God calls us, He doesn’t leave us empty-handed. He enriches us with gifts, abilities, and knowledge. You have been given everything you need to fulfill your purpose. Sometimes we don’t feel equipped, but God’s Word assures us that we are.

III. Waiting with Confidence (verse 7)

In verse 7, Paul mentions that the Corinthians “do not lack any spiritual gift” as they “eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.”

Key Point: Live with purpose and expectation.

We’re not just killing time until Jesus returns. We’re called to use our gifts, to serve, to make a difference right where we are. And as we do, we live with the excitement of knowing that one day, we’ll see Jesus face to face.

IV. God’s Faithfulness Guarantees Our Perseverance (verses 8-9)

Finally, in verses 8-9, Paul gives this incredible assurance: “[God] will also keep you firm to the end… God is faithful.”

Key Point: Our success doesn’t depend on our strength, but on God’s faithfulness.

On those days when you feel weak, when you wonder if you can keep going, remember this: God is faithful. He will keep you strong. He will complete the good work He started in you.

Conclusion

So, my friends, as we close today, I want to ask you: Will you answer God’s call? Will you step into the purpose He has for you? Will you trust in His faithfulness?

Remember, you are called. You are equipped. You are empowered by the faithful God who loves you. Now go and live out that divine purpose with confidence and joy!

Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for calling us, for equipping us, and for your unwavering faithfulness. Help us to live out our divine purpose with courage and joy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

God’s Word for Today

Today, we’re reflecting on 1 Corinthians 1:1–9. In this passage, the apostle Paul writes to the church in Corinth, reminding them—and us—that we are sanctified in Christ and called to be holy. He emphasizes God’s faithfulness and the spiritual gifts given to us to strengthen our walk with Him.

1 Corinthians 1:1–9 (NIV)
¹ Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,
² To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:
³ Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
⁴ I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.
⁵ For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge—
⁶ God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you.
⁷ Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.
⁸ He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
⁹ God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
