Scripture Reading
Introduction to Jeremiah 2:4-13
Today, we’re diving into a powerful passage from the book of Jeremiah. This is God speaking to His people through the prophet, reminding them of His faithfulness and calling them out on their unfaithfulness. It’s a wake-up call, but also a love letter from a God who refuses to give up on His children.
Events in the Bible Verse
In this passage, God is addressing the Israelites, recalling how He led them out of Egypt and provided for them. But despite His goodness, the people turned away from Him, chasing after worthless idols. God expresses His hurt and disappointment, comparing their actions to exchanging a fountain of living water for cracked cisterns that can’t hold water.
Jeremiah 2:4-13 (NIV)
4 Hear the word of the Lord, you descendants of Jacob, all you clans of Israel.
5 This is what the Lord says: “What fault did your ancestors find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves.
6 They did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness, through a land of deserts and ravines, a land of drought and utter darkness, a land where no one travels and no one lives?’
7 I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable.
8 The priests did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord?’ Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols.
9 “Therefore I bring charges against you again,” declares the Lord. “And I will bring charges against your children’s children.
10 Cross over to the coasts of Cyprus and look, send to Kedar and observe closely; see if there has ever been anything like this:
11 Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols.
12 Be appalled at this, you heavens, and shudder with great horror,” declares the Lord.
13 “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer
Loving Father, as we reflect on Your words through Jeremiah, we’re reminded of Your unwavering love and our tendency to wander. We confess that like the Israelites, we too have sometimes chased after things that don’t satisfy, forgetting the living water You freely offer.
Lord, help us to remember Your goodness and faithfulness. Guide us back to You when we stray. Open our eyes to see the broken cisterns in our lives – those things we’ve put our trust in that can never truly satisfy our souls.
We pray for our community, our nation, and our world. May we be a people who continually seek You, who ask “Where is the Lord?” and who point others to Your living water. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Congregational Prayer Response
Leader: Lord, You are the spring of living water.
Congregation: Forgive us when we turn to broken cisterns.
Leader: You have been faithful through all generations.
Congregation: Help us to remain faithful to You.
All: Amen.
Offering
You know, friends, when we give our tithes and offerings, it’s so much more than just dropping money in a plate. It’s an act of worship, a tangible way of saying, “God, I trust You with every area of my life, including my finances.” It’s a reminder that everything we have comes from Him, and when we give back, we’re participating in His work in the world.
Let’s pray together as we prepare to give:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your abundant blessings in our lives. As we give today, we do so with grateful hearts, knowing that You are the source of all good things. Use these gifts to further Your kingdom and bless those in need. Help us to be good stewards of all You’ve entrusted to us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Special Music
As we continue in our worship, we have a special treat for you. Our choir has prepared a beautiful rendition of “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.” As you listen, let the words of this timeless hymn remind you of God’s unwavering love and constant presence in your life.

The Story That Changes Everything
Hey there, friend! You know, sometimes I feel like we’re all a bit like the Israelites in Jeremiah’s time. We get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget about the incredible love story God’s been writing with us since day one.
Picture this: You’re walking through a lush, green garden. The air is fresh, the fruits are ripe, and you can feel God’s presence all around you. That’s the kind of relationship He wants with us! But then, life happens. We get distracted. We start chasing after things that seem important but leave us feeling empty.
That’s exactly what God was addressing through Jeremiah. He was saying, “Hey, remember when we first fell in love? What happened? Where did you go?” It’s not an angry accusation, but a heartfelt plea from a God who misses His people.
Now, here’s the amazing part. Even after all our wandering, God’s still there, arms wide open, ready to welcome us back. He’s offering living water in a world full of leaky cisterns. Imagine never being thirsty again – that’s what God promises!
So, here’s what I’m proposing:
