A Warm Welcome to You

Hello, everyone! It is so good to see you today. Whether you’ve been walking with Jesus for decades or you’re just starting to ask questions about faith, please know that you are welcome here. We believe that you aren’t here by accident; God has a purpose for your life, and He loves you more than you can imagine. We are a family here, imperfect but growing together in grace. So, take a deep breath, relax, and get ready to hear some good news today. We are so glad you’re home.

Community Updates

To help you get connected and grow, here are a few things coming up in the life of our church:

  • Small Groups Launch: We were made for community, not isolation. Our new small groups start next week—sign up in the lobby to find your circle of friends.
  • Community Food Drive: Let’s be the hands and feet of Jesus. Bring non-perishable items next Sunday to help our neighbors in need.
  • Newcomers Lunch: If you are new here, we’d love to buy you lunch! Join us right after the service in the fellowship hall to meet the staff and hear our heart for this city.

Section 2. Call to Worship – Focusing on the Good News

Today, we are turning our hearts toward a moment in history that changed everything. We aren’t just gathering to sing songs; we are gathering to remember that God didn’t stay distant—He came near. Just as the angels announced to the shepherds in Luke 2, we are here to celebrate “good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” Let’s prepare our hearts to meet with God.

Responsive Reading

  • Leader: Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
  • Congregation: Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
  • Leader: This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.
  • All: Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.

Section 3. Opening Prayer – Inviting God’s Presence

Father, we thank You so much for bringing us together today. Thank You that You are not a God who hides from us, but a God who comes looking for us. As we open Your Word and lift our voices, quiet the distractions in our minds. Help us to hear Your voice and feel Your love. We want to know You more and understand the plans You have for us. Open our eyes to the joy of salvation today. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Section 4. Praise and Worship – Lifting Our Voices

One of the best ways we can express our love back to God is through music. It’s not about having a perfect voice; it’s about having a sincere heart. When we sing, we are shifting our focus from our problems to God’s promises. So, whether you prefer a quiet melody or a joyful anthem, let’s stand together and lift our hearts in adoration to the One who made us and saves us.

Section 5. Scripture Reading – The Story That Changed History

Today we are looking at Luke 2:1-20. This is a familiar passage for many, often read at Christmas, but its power is for every single day of the year. This isn’t a fairy tale; it is the historical account of the moment God stepped into our world, not in a palace, but in a humble manger.

Understanding the Scene

In this passage, we see a real setting with real political figures like Caesar Augustus. We see a young couple, Mary and Joseph, faithfully traveling to Bethlehem. But the most amazing part is who God chooses to tell first. He doesn’t send the angels to the religious elite or the wealthy; He sends them to shepherds—regular, working-class people out in the fields. It’s a reminder that the Gospel is for everyone, no matter who you are or what you do.

Luke 2:1-20 (NIV)

1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register. 4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” 16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Section 6. Pastoral Prayer or Intercessory Prayer

Prayer for Peace and Awareness

Lord, just as the shepherds were doing their daily work when Your glory appeared, we pray that You would meet us in our daily lives. We pray for those in our congregation who feel overlooked or unimportant, that they would know they are the first recipients of Your good news. We pray for peace in our hearts and peace in our world, the kind of peace that only the Prince of Peace can bring. Help us to be like Mary, treasuring Your words in our hearts, and like the shepherds, eager to share the good news with others.

Congregational Prayer Response

All: Lord Jesus, we thank You that You came for us. You are our Savior and our Messiah. When the world is chaotic, remind us of the peace proclaimed by the angels. Give us the courage to go and see what You are doing in the world, and the boldness to glorify You in everything we do. Amen.

Section 7. Offering – Giving as an Act of Worship

We’ve come to a time in our service where we can give back a portion of what God has blessed us with. You know, giving isn’t just about keeping the lights on; it’s a spiritual discipline. It’s a way of saying, “God, I trust You with my security.” When we give our tithes and offerings, we are declaring that God is the owner of everything and we are just the managers. Let’s give today with joy, knowing that we are partnering in the work of spreading this Good News.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Father, thank You for Your generosity toward us. You gave us the greatest gift of all in Your Son, Jesus. We ask that You bless these tithes and offerings. Use them to bring hope to the hopeless and to share Your love with our community and the world. We give this as an act of worship, honoring You as our Provider. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Section 8. Special Music – Preparing Our Hearts for the Message

Before we move into the teaching today, we have a special musical presentation. As you listen to the lyrics and the melody, let them wash over you. Use this time to quiet your heart and prepare your mind to receive what God wants to say to you through His Word today.
