The Opening: Welcome and Scripture

Good morning, church family! It’s always a blessing to gather together in God’s house. Today, we’re going to talk about something incredibly important: God’s unchanging promise to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. Hebrews 7:23-28 shows us how Jesus is the perfect high priest who stands for us forever. I’m excited to dive into this passage with you as we explore the beauty of His eternal work on our behalf.

Opening Prayer

Let’s bow our heads together.
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing us together today. We are grateful for Your love, Your grace, and the gift of Your Son, Jesus. Open our hearts to hear Your Word today. Help us to understand more of Your purpose for our lives and to grow in our walk with You. May we leave here changed by Your Spirit, ready to live out Your will in our daily lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Introduction to Scripture

Hebrews 7:23-28 is a powerful passage about Jesus being our eternal high priest. The writer reminds us that, unlike the old priests who came and went, Jesus is forever. His work on the cross was once and for all. He stands between us and God, and He never stops interceding for us. This is good news because it means we never have to worry about being separated from God—Jesus has made the way.

The Events in the NIV Bible Verse

In these verses, the author of Hebrews is comparing the old covenant priests, who were many because they couldn’t live forever, with Jesus, our perfect high priest. The old priests had to keep offering sacrifices over and over, but Jesus offered Himself once for all. His sacrifice is perfect, and His role as high priest is permanent. He will never stop praying for us, never stop standing for us before the Father.

Scripture: Hebrews 7:23-28 (NIV)

23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office;
24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.
25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
26 Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.
27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.
28 For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

Intercessory Prayer

Let’s pray together.
Father, we thank You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, our eternal high priest. We are grateful that He stands in the gap for us, offering us complete salvation. Help us to trust in His finished work on the cross and to rest in the knowledge that we are forever secure in Him. May we live each day in the confidence of Your love and grace, and may our lives reflect the hope we have in Jesus. In His name, Amen.

Congregational Prayer Response

Let’s say this together as a church:
“Lord, we thank You that Jesus is our eternal high priest. Because of Him, we are saved completely. Help us to live in the joy of that truth every day. Amen.”

Expository Sermon Outline: Hebrews 7:23-28

1. The Temporary Priests (Hebrews 7:23-24)

– “The old priests came and went, but Jesus remains forever.”
In this section, we see the contrast between the many priests under the old covenant and the permanence of Jesus as our high priest, who lives forever to represent us before God.

2. The Complete Salvation (Hebrews 7:25)

– “Jesus saves us completely and continually intercedes for us.”
Here, the writer emphasizes Jesus’ ability to save us fully because His priesthood never ends. His ongoing intercession for us ensures that we are always covered by His grace.

3. The Perfect High Priest (Hebrews 7:26-27)

– “Jesus is sinless, holy, and offered the perfect sacrifice—Himself.”
This section describes the holiness and purity of Jesus, who is set apart from sin and offered Himself once and for all as the perfect sacrifice for our sins, unlike the repeated sacrifices of the old priests.

4. The Eternal Priesthood (Hebrews 7:28)

– “Jesus’ priesthood is established by God’s promise and is eternal.”
The final verse shows that while the law appointed weak men as priests, God’s oath appointed Jesus, who has been made perfect forever. His priesthood is eternal and unchanging.
