Introduction to Scripture: Jeremiah 31:31-34

In the passage we’re about to delve into, found in Jeremiah 31:31-34, we witness the prophet Jeremiah conveying a message of profound hope and promise from the Lord. Amidst the tumultuous events of his time, God speaks of a new covenant He will establish with His people, one not etched on stone tablets but written upon their hearts. It’s a covenant that promises forgiveness, intimate relationship, and the indwelling of His Spirit. Let us now turn our attention to these timeless words of divine reassurance.

Jeremiah 31:31-34 (NIV)

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.
32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord.
33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Intercessory Prayer

Gracious Father, as we reflect on the covenant you have made with your people, we are reminded of your unfailing love and mercy. We lift up to you those among us who may be struggling to understand or embrace this covenant fully. May your Spirit work in their hearts, illuminating the depth of your grace and the magnitude of your forgiveness. Help us, Lord, to walk in the light of this covenant each day, bearing witness to your transformative power in our lives and in the lives of those around us.

Congregational Response

With hearts filled with gratitude and humility, let us respond to the Lord’s promises with faith and surrender. Together, let us pray:

“Lord, thank you for your enduring love and faithfulness. Help us to embrace the new covenant you have established with us, allowing your word to dwell richly in our hearts. May we live as living testimonies of your grace, extending forgiveness and love to those around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
