Introduction to Scripture: Jesus Prays for His Disciples

In the Gospel of John, chapter 17, verses 6 to 19, we witness a profound moment as Jesus offers a heartfelt prayer to the Father on behalf of his disciples. It is the eve of his crucifixion, and Jesus, knowing the challenges that lie ahead for his followers, lifts them up in prayer. He acknowledges that they belong to the Father and recognizes the sacred responsibility entrusted to him to reveal God’s name to them. Jesus prays for their protection, unity, and sanctification, knowing that they will face trials and temptations in the world. Let us now turn to these verses and listen attentively to the words of our Lord.

NIV Bible Verse: John 17:6-19

6 “I have revealed you[a] to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.
7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you.
8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.
9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.
10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.
11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.
12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[b] that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.
14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.
15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.
17 Sanctify them by[c] the truth; your word is truth.
18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

Intercessory Prayer

Heavenly Father,

As we meditate on the prayer of Jesus for his disciples, we are reminded of the profound love and care you have for each of us. Just as Jesus prayed for his followers, we lift up before you our brothers and sisters in faith. Protect them, O Lord, by the power of your name, and grant them unity and strength in the face of trials. Sanctify them by your truth and equip them to be your witnesses in the world. May they experience the full measure of joy that comes from knowing and serving you. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Strengthen us to face the challenges of this world with courage and conviction, knowing that you are with us always. May our lives reflect the joy and peace that come from following you, and may we be a light to others in darkness. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Sermon Introduction: Praying for Discipleship

Dear friends,

Today, we embark on a journey into the heart of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples. As we delve into John 17:6-19, we uncover not just words uttered centuries ago, but timeless truths that resonate deeply with us today. Imagine yourself walking alongside Jesus, listening intently as he pours out his heart to the Father. This prayer, spoken on the eve of his crucifixion, reveals the depth of Jesus’ love and concern for those who would carry on his mission. Let us open our hearts and minds to receive the wisdom and guidance contained within these verses.

Setting the Scene Socially and Historically

In the historical context of John 17, Jesus finds himself in the final hours before his betrayal and crucifixion. The weight of what lies ahead hangs heavily upon him, yet his thoughts are not solely consumed by his own impending suffering. Instead, Jesus turns his gaze to his disciples, those whom he has chosen to carry forth his message of love and redemption. In a world marked by division and strife, Jesus prays for their unity and protection. Today, as we grapple with similar challenges in our own society, Jesus’ prayer remains relevant. We, too, are called to be disciples of Christ, bearing witness to his transformative power in a world in desperate need of hope and healing.
