Opening Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
We come before you with hearts full of gratitude for this opportunity to worship and learn from your Word. We humbly ask for your presence to be with us as we delve into the scriptures. Open our minds and hearts to receive your wisdom and guidance. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
Introduction to Scripture:
In the passage from 1 Samuel 3:1-10, we witness a pivotal moment in the life of a young boy named Samuel. At this time in Israel’s history, the word of the Lord was rare, and there were no frequent visions. Samuel, a child, served in the temple under the guidance of Eli the priest. One night, as Samuel lay down to sleep, the Lord called out to him. Initially, Samuel thought it was Eli, but after a series of calls, he realized it was the voice of God. This passage reminds us that God often chooses unexpected vessels to deliver His messages, emphasizing the importance of attentiveness to His voice.
NIV Bible Verse: 1 Samuel 3:1-10:
1 The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days, the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions.
2 One night, Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place.
3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was.
4 Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.”
5 And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.
6 Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”
7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.
8 A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy.
9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
Intercessory Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
We come before you, just as young Samuel did, with open hearts, ready to listen to your voice. We pray for the ability to discern your call amidst the noise of this world. May we, like Samuel, respond with a humble and obedient spirit, saying, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” We lift up our congregation and our community, asking for your guidance and wisdom in our daily lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Congregational Response:
Dear Lord,
We echo the words of Samuel, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” Help us to be attentive to your voice, to seek your guidance, and to grow in our relationship with you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
